Principal Software Engineer

£85,000 to £90,000

Working pattern: Hybrid, 2 days a week in the office

Location: London

A well-established international business is hiring a Principal or Senior Software Engineer to be the person its product teams turn to for technical direction, working in C# and.NET.

This is a senior hands-on role in a small central engineering group that supports the wider department. You would move between delivery teams, sometimes for an afternoon, sometimes for half a year, helping them settle an architecture or build the piece that needs more experience. You would not be maintaining someone else's system. You would set the design, write the code that proves it works, and leave the team in a better place than you found it.

Because the work moves across teams, you would see codebases at every stage of life and work to what each team needs. Part of the job is earning enough trust that teams call you early rather than late. You would also run a small number of projects of your own alongside the team support, and you would end up with a view of the whole technology estate that very few roles offer.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What you would own:

  • Architecture decisions on the teams you join, shaped with them, followed by the hardest part of the build once the direction is agreed
  • The call on whether a team needs a few hours of your time or you embedded with them for months
  • A small number of your own projects
  • Relationships with the delivery teams, so you are brought in at the right moment
  • The technical standard across the teams you touch, set by the quality of your own work

What they need from you:

  • Strong C# and.NET, with enough depth to walk into an unfamiliar codebase and be useful quickly
  • A track record of shaping architecture while still writing code, whether your title was Principal, Lead or the Senior engineer everyone relied on
  • Azure experience across App Services, Functions, Service Bus, Event Grid, storage and Application Insights
  • Solid experience on both sides of the data layer, Azure SQL and a document store such as Cosmos DB
  • CI/CD, test automation and observability as part of how you normally work
  • The people skills to influence teams who invite you in rather than report to you
