As part of the M&S Software Engineering team

You’ll be joining a well-loved historic brand, working on solutions that serve millions of loyal customers and thousands of colleagues. With ethical values that run right through the company’s core and technology leaders who truly understand software engineering, it’s an exciting time as we’re redefining ourselves into a digital-first and engineering-led organisation, with the quality of our engineering team being a key differentiator.

We are seeking a passionate Principal Software Engineer

to join our Food & International Food category, where you will be a driving force behind the modernisation of mission-critical systems as M&S continues to scale and transform. Working across multiple engineering teams, you will provide technical leadership, shape engineering strategy and help build robust, scalable and reusable platforms that support critical Food and Supply Chain capabilities.

Due to high interest, this role may close earlier than advertised. We recommend applying as soon as possible.

What You'll Do

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Lead technical excellence across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and design through delivery, launch, operations and continuous improvement of strategic platforms and programmes.
  • Drive technical direction and influence engineering strategy, technology investment decisions and product roadmaps while partnering with Engineering, Technology and Product leadership.
  • Champion engineering excellence through Communities of Practice, promoting clean code, clean architecture, modern engineering practices and operational excellence.
  • Mentor and develop senior engineers across the organisation, helping teams solve complex problems, improve engineering maturity and adopt scalable delivery practices.
  • Drive innovation, DevOps and automation, enabling teams to improve engineering productivity, delivery quality, reliability and ownership of their services.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, engineering branding and knowledge-sharing initiatives while contributing to the broader engineering ecosystem and technical community.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
