Principal Software Engineer – Manchester/Glover, Raytheon UK

Location: Manchester, Lancashire or Gloucester (Hybrid Working Pattern) Role Type: Full-time, Permanent, Onsite Publication Date: 2026-06-24

About the Role

Raytheon UK is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join their technical team, supporting critical software development for defence, intelligence, and cyber sectors. This opportunity focuses on technical leadership, with an optional hybrid of people management responsibilities. You’ll collaborate within a cross-functional team to design, develop, and deploy sophisticated software solutions.

This role requires SC security clearance (current or eligible) and willingness to obtain eDV (Enhanced Dangerous Vehicles) clearance if applicable for assigned projects.


Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Software Engineer, you’ll:

  • Design and build secure, high-quality software following industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, cross-functional teams, and engineers to shape technical direction.
  • Guide development teams (or peers), mentor junior colleagues, and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Work on milestone-driven projects, delivering and scaling critical systems across defence, AI/ML, geospatial, and cyber domains.

  • Full-stack development (preferably in the following ecosystem):
    • JavaScript frameworks: React, NextJS
    • TypeScript
    • Python/Java
  • REST API development with OpenAPI/Swagger.
  • Cloud platforms: Deep experience with AWS or Azure.
  • Containerisation & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Terraform, Ansible.
  • Database management: Relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL), Elasticsearch/Opensearch.
  • Unit testing & automation: Testing frameworks: Jest, Cypress, Mocha. CI/CD pipeline optimization.
