The Role
Working within the Public Health team as a Principal Spatial Planner, you’ll play a pivotal role at the intersection of spatial planning and public health. Alongside an existing Principal Spatial Planner, you’ll collaborate closely with planning, transport, and environment teams across the Council, as well as Local Planning Authorities.
This role offers a unique opportunity to shape an emerging area of practice by embedding health and wellbeing into planning policy, place-based projects, and major developments, helping to create healthier communities and reduce inequalities.
What you’ll do
- Provide expert advice and proactive technical leadership on public health within spatial planning to internal teams, local authorities, developers, and multi-agency partners.
- Support the spatial planning team in building a progressive vision and culture, helping colleagues maximize public health value in strategic planning and major projects alike.
- Contribute to the development of policies and guidance in line with national and local planning policy.
- Translate public health intelligence, including health inequalities, into spatial planning policy and proposals.
- Respond to Local Plans, major development planning applications, and infrastructure projects from a public health perspective.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
