Job Description
We are delighted to announce this unique opportunity for a Specialist Orthodontist to join us as Principal Specialist Orthodontist at our hub and spoke site, Southampton Orthodontic Centre and New Forest Orthodontics. With 24,000 UOAs available, this is a substantial, established NHS contract with an experienced therapy team. We’d be interested to speak with experienced specialist orthodontists, with flexibility around how the contract could be structured.
As highly established specialist clinics in the Southampton area, both our Southampton Orthodontic Centre and New Forest Orthodontics practices have a fantastic team of colleagues with a dual site Practice Manager, dedicated to providing both high quality specialist NHS and private orthodontic care. We now have this unique and substantial opportunity available with 24,000 UOAs, due to replacing our retiring specialist who has been managing the contract through the established therapy-led model, supported by four experienced therapists. We’re seeking specialists who would embrace this therapy model, taking on either the full contract, or sharing the units across our two practices as a hub and spoke model.
We can offer:
- A role with 2 elements to it:
- As the Principal Orthodontist with a significant UOA contract and established Orthodontic Therapist model
- A formal Clinical Leader position which we call Practice Clinical Lead as part of the PortmanDentex clinical leadership team (see below for more details on PCLs)
This would be a full-time commitment due to the size of the contract.
You would have the support of an existing team of orthodontic support colleagues, benefiting from therapy-led working practices already in place to ensure efficient diary management and positive patient outcomes.
We offer full clinical freedom and the highest levels of patient care. The team works collaboratively to ensure a seamless patient journey.
Southampton Orthodontic Centre has iTero scanner, OPG, USO, and CEPH. It is located on the high street of Bedford place with many shops and cafes close by and just a 10 to 15-minute walk from Southampton Central station which has links to, e.g., London and Portsmouth.
New Forest is an affluent area with high patient demand. It has a 2-chair surgery with a bright waiting room and small lab. It has an iTero scanner, OPG & USO, and is located at the end of the high street in Lymington, with many shops and cafes within a short walk. There are 2 train stations which connect to Brockenhurst for services to London Waterloo and other major cities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This is a unique opportunity to be full-time, with a substantial NHS contract with the additional seniority of clinical leadership.
About the Clinical Lead Opportunity
Our vision is for each practice to be led in partnership by two critical roles:
- A high-performing Practice Manager (PM) who focuses on financial, operational, and people leadership
- A Practice Clinical Lead (PCL) who focuses on the clinical leadership of the practice, how clinical factors directly impact the performance and direction of the practice, and who works with the Practice Manager.
We recently introduced the Practice Clinical Lead role into a number of our practices, to help us emulate the leadership that is lost when former practice owners either leave their practices or look to focus on wider interests. We’ve seen some impressive results from our first 35 PCLs, many of whom feel they have embarked on a whole new dentistry adventure through this opportunity.
Consequently, we are now recruiting new Practice Clinical Leads to help us achieve this same success across more of our practices.
The Practice Manager and Practice Clinical Lead work together as the practice leadership team to lead the practice and make it as efficient and successful as possible, while being a great place for colleagues to work and clinicians to practice and deliver high levels of clinical care.
This really is a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the commercial and leadership aspects of an ambitious and high-growth business, in an environment that will provide you with the support and development you need in order to achieve your potential.
Your key, high-level responsibilities as PCL will be to:
- Act as a clinical leadership figure in the practice alongside the Practice Manager, with the ability to influence the direction of the practice.
- Provide clinical focus and maintain clinical standards.
- With our support, define the practice ambition and strategy.
- Mentor others and give them a clinical voice.
- Act as a cultural ambassador for the Portman Group as well as the practice.
- Provide a positive influence to all practice colleagues to support engagement.

- You would still work to UOAs and have a self-employed contract but would also spend a small part of your week in an employed role for a leading dental provider. The PCL role will be distinct and separate from your Associate Agreement and would be circa 4 hours per week.
- A guaranteed monthly salary for the duties carried out as Practice Clinical Lead in addition to your self-employed package as Principal Specialist. The PCL contract also rewards you with a share of the practice profit, with no personal investment required.
