About the Role

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you'll take a leading role in the delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects across sectors including commercial, residential, education, healthcare, and mixed-use developments. Working as part of our multidisciplinary London team, you'll provide technical leadership from project inception through to completion, ensuring innovative, efficient, and sustainable structural solutions are delivered to the highest standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural design and analysis of building projects.
  • Oversee project delivery and ensure quality, programme, and commercial objectives are achieved.
  • Produce and review detailed calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Provide guidance and technical assurance to the wider team.
  • Collaborate with architects, clients, contractors, and fellow engineering disciplines to develop integrated design solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Attend project and design team meetings.
  • Represent Waterman with professionalism throughout the project lifecycle.

As a senior member of the team, you'll play an important role in mentoring and developing Graduate, Engineer, and Senior Engineer colleagues. You'll review technical work, provide coaching and support professional development, helping to foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

Qualifications

Although we're happy to consider applicants with varying levels of experience, you'll ideally have qualifications, experience, or skills in the following areas:

  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status (MIStructE or MICE).
  • Significant experience delivering structural engineering projects within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge across a range of structural materials, including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent understanding of CDM Regulations, British Standards, and Eurocodes.
  • Strong client-facing skills with the ability to develop and maintain long-term relationships.
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical designs, calculations, and reports.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and commercial awareness, with the ability to manage project budgets, resources, and programmes effectively.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach and a passion for delivering sustainable engineering solutions.
