Senior Systems Engineer
Expleo is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support the growth of Expleo's Marine business unit. The successful candidate will provide systems engineering expertise across complex maritime and underwater systems programmes, with responsibility for requirements engineering, system architecture, systems integration, verification and validation, technical leadership, and delivery of systems engineering artefacts throughout the system lifecycle.
Working within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment, you will support the development and integration of advanced underwater ranging, tracking and monitoring capabilities for a high-profile UK Defence programme. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of critical national capability across complex maritime engineering projects.
This role will require the eligibility to obtain Security Clearance to SC level (existing SC clearance is preferred but not essential) as well as onsite attendance 2-3 days per week in either Farnborough or Portsmouth.
Responsibilities
- Apply systems engineering best practice in accordance with ISO 15288 principles and lifecycle processes.
- Capture, analyse, manage and validate stakeholder, user and system requirements.
- Develop system architectures, concepts of operation and system design solutions.
- Produce and maintain key systems engineering artefacts throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead systems engineering activities across complex defence and maritime programmes.
- Support system modelling, integration, verification, validation and acceptance activities.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Work closely with project managers, stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure successful programme delivery.
- Manage technical risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies, escalating where appropriate.
- Review and assure the quality of technical deliverables produced by other engineers.
- Support compliance with relevant engineering, safety and regulatory standards.
- Contribute to technical reviews and customer presentations.
- Mentor and support the development of junior systems engineers.
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree qualified in Systems Engineering, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related STEM discipline.
- Demonstrable systems engineering experience within a complex engineering environment.
- Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (SC).
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards professional registration.
- INCOSE certification or equivalent systems engineering accreditation.
- Postgraduate qualification in Systems Engineering or a related engineering discipline

Essential skills
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes.
- Requirements engineering and requirements management expertise.
- System architecture and system design experience.
- Systems integration, verification and validation knowledge.
- Technical leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to define and tailor systems engineering processes to programme requirements.
- Experience producing technical documentation including requirements specifications, design documentation, management plans and test reports.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation abilities.
- Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
Desired skills
Ideally candidates will be able to demonstrate one or more of the following:
- Experience applying Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies and tools.
- Knowledge of underwater systems, sonar technologies, acoustic sensing or maritime surveillance systems.
- Experience working on Defence, Maritime, Naval or Government programmes.
- Familiarity with systems integration of control, instrumentation, monitoring or communications systems.
- Understanding of system verification, validation, qualification and acceptance activities.
- Experience defining Concepts of Operation (CONOPS) and operational architecture artefacts.
- Knowledge of Systems Engineering standards including ISO 15288 and associated Defence standards.
- Experience supporting the development of safety-critical or mission-critical systems.
- Exposure to requirements management tools such as DOORS, DOORS Next, Jama or equivalent.
- Familiarity with systems modelling tools such as Enterprise Architect, Cameo, Capella or equivalent.
- Understanding of systems engineering governance, configuration management and change control processes.
- Experience mentoring, coaching or providing technical oversight to junior engineers.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or active progression towards professional registration.
- Current or previously held Security Clearance (SC) or higher.
- Experience working within underwater test, evaluation, ranging or maritime capability delivery environments.

- Delivery of technical work packages and reporting progress against programme objectives.
- Working within governance frameworks, engineering standards and quality processes.

Desirable Experience
Ideally candidates will possess experience in one or more of the following:
- Underwater systems, sonar, acoustic sensing or maritime platforms.
- Defence range instrumentation and monitoring systems.
- Maritime surveillance systems.
- Control and instrumentation systems.
- Data, information and communications systems.
- Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
- Systems engineering within military or government environments.
- Working on programmes requiring Security Clearance.
- Knowledge of naval, maritime or underwater test and evaluation environments.
What do I need before I apply
This role supports UK Defence and safety-critical programmes. Applicants should be comfortable working on these programmes within highly regulated engineering and assurance environments.
Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain the required level of UK Security Clearance.
Some assignments may require attendance at customer, secure or classified sites.
