Role: Principal System Safety Engineer – Rail Infrastructure
Location: Old Oak Common, London (site-based)
Department: Design / Technical Assurance
About the role:
We are seeking an experienced Principal System Safety Engineer to lead system safety, interoperability and regulatory assurance for a major, complex rail infrastructure programme. You will guide a multidisciplinary team and work across design, construction, integration, commissioning and entry into service to ensure robust compliance with the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM-RA) and applicable railway interoperability requirements.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead system safety and interoperability delivery across a phased, multi-contractor programme.
- Own and maintain the project Hazard Record, safety plans, system definitions, compliance matrices and safety justification evidence.
- Plan and facilitate HAZID, HAZOP, hazard review and safety requirement workshops.
- Assess change from a system safety perspective and support progressive assurance reporting.
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, operations, clients, independent assessors and regulatory stakeholders.
- Manage and develop the system safety and interoperability team, aligning priorities with programme and technical assurance needs.

Essential experience:
- Engineering degree or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Strong experience delivering system safety on major infrastructure projects across the project lifecycle.
- Applied knowledge of CSM-RA, hazard management and UK railway assurance frameworks.
- Experience leading teams, managing complex workloads and influencing senior stakeholders.
- Confident communicator with experience facilitating safety workshops, reviews and training.
- Experience using and managing requirements in IBM DOORS or a comparable tool.

Desirable:
- Rail or civil engineering experience, including systems integration and construction assurance.
- Knowledge of UK rail design standards, interoperability requirements and CDM Regulations 2015.
- Experience working with independent assessment and regulatory bodies.
- Chartered engineer status.
