Principal Transport Planner – Development Planning
Location: Leeds
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

The Opportunity
We are working with a leading and growing transport planning consultancy in Leeds that is looking to appoint a Principal Transport Planner to strengthen its Development Planning team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport planning professional who enjoys working at the interface between transport, development, and planning, and who wants to take a leading role in delivering high-quality projects for a diverse range of clients.
The successful candidate will have strong technical experience across development planning, excellent client-facing skills, and the ability to lead projects and support more junior members of the team.
The Role
As a Principal Transport Planner, you will take responsibility for managing and delivering a range of development planning projects, working closely with clients, local authorities, developers, architects, and other professional consultants.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading transport planning commissions from inception through to completion.
- Preparing and reviewing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, and Travel Plans.
- Providing transport planning advice to developers and other private-sector clients.
- Assessing the transport implications of residential, commercial, retail, industrial, and mixed-use developments.
- Undertaking development-related highways and transport assessments.
- Liaising with Local Planning Authorities, National Highways, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Supporting planning applications and the discharge of transport-related planning conditions.
- Providing strategic transport and development advice to clients.
- Managing project budgets, programmes, and deliverables.
- Reviewing and providing technical input into the work of junior and intermediate planners.
- Developing and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Supporting the wider business with fee proposals, tenders, and business development opportunities.
- Representing the company at client and stakeholder meetings.

About You
We are looking for someone with a strong background in Development Planning / Transport Planning who is ready to operate at Principal level.
You will ideally have:
- A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related discipline.
- Significant professional experience within transport planning, ideally within a consultancy environment.
- Strong experience delivering development planning projects.
- Proven experience preparing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, and Travel Plans.
- Good knowledge of the UK planning system and the role of transport within the planning process.
- Experience liaising with Local Planning Authorities and other stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent report-writing and technical capabilities.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
- Experience mentoring or managing junior members of a team.
- Strong commercial awareness and client management skills.
- Chartered status or working towards Chartered Membership of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) would be advantageous, although not essential.
