Principal Transport Planner

At Milestone Transport Planning, we provide an integrated approach to Transport Planning and Highways Design, supporting a wide range of public and private sector clients across the UK.

With established offices in Fleet, Hampshire and Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, we are continuing to grow our presence in Birmingham and are looking for an experienced Principal Transport Planner to play a key role in developing our Midlands team.

Our work spans a broad range of development projects and includes development transport planning, S278/S38 highway design, drainage, environmental planning and project implementation. We pride ourselves on providing commercially focused, practical advice and building long-standing relationships with our clients.

Our people are central to Milestone's success. We have a supportive, collaborative working culture and place a strong emphasis on professional development, knowledge sharing and giving people the opportunity to take ownership of their work and progress their careers.

We are now looking for a Principal Transport Planner to join our Birmingham team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport planning professional who wants to take responsibility for their own projects and clients, support the development of junior colleagues and help us continue to grow our presence in the Midlands.

You will manage the transport planning process across a range of development projects, producing and overseeing high-quality technical work while ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget and in line with client expectations.

Main Duties

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and reviewing Transport Assessments and Transport Statements.
  • Preparing Travel Plans and providing Travel Plan coordination where required.
  • Preparing and presenting technical data, drawings and supporting information.
  • Undertaking and reviewing junction capacity assessments using software including ARCADY, PICADY and LinSig.
  • Liaising directly with clients, consultants, contractors and local and national highway authorities.
  • Managing your own projects and workload to ensure work is delivered on time and within agreed budgets.
  • Reviewing and checking technical work produced by junior team members.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior colleagues to develop their technical knowledge and experience.
  • Working closely with Team Leaders and Directors to provide comprehensive highways and transport advice to clients.
  • Providing input from the early feasibility and site appraisal stages through to planning submissions and project delivery.
  • Undertaking site visits and designing and commissioning transport surveys.
  • Contributing to technical reports, presentations and client material.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date project records and files.
  • Supporting business development, client relationships and the identification of new opportunities.
  • Playing an active role in the continued growth and development of the Birmingham office and Midlands client base.
  • Undertaking other related duties as reasonably required.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
