An exciting opportunity for a Principal VCSEL Engineer to join an early-stage photonics start-up developing breakthrough optical computing technology.
This is a highly influential, hands-on position where you will take technical ownership of the semiconductor laser platform, working closely with the founding team to develop next-generation devices for high-performance photonic computing.
The Principal VCSEL Engineer responsibilities include:
- Lead the design and simulation of semiconductor lasers, ideally VCSELs
- Model optical cavities, DBR structures and laser dynamics
- Optimise electrical, thermal and optical device performance
- Drive design decisions across epitaxy, device design, fabrication and reliability
- Develop simulation workflows and validate models against fabricated devices
- Help shape the technical direction of the laser platform and future team

To be the ideal candidate for the Principal VCSEL Engineer your background and experience will include:
- PhD or equivalent experience in semiconductor lasers, ideally VCSELs
- Strong laser/device modelling and simulation experience
- Experience with Lumerical, COMSOL, Sentaurus, PICS3D, Silvaco or similar
- Strong Python skills
- Experience comparing simulations with real fabricated and characterised devices
- Comfortable taking significant technical ownership within an early-stage environment
