Principal or Lead RF Engineer
A high-technology engineering business in County Durham is looking to appoint a Principal or Lead RF Engineer to support the design and delivery of advanced RF, microwave, and mmWave products for telecommunications, aerospace, and defence applications.
This is a senior technical role for an engineer who wants to stay close to the design work whilst providing clear technical leadership across complex, high-frequency programmes. You will work from concept through to production, using advanced RF simulation tools, specialist test capability and in-house manufacturing support to deliver robust products for demanding real-world environments.
The role would suit an experienced RF, microwave or mmWave engineer with strong high frequency design experience, practical product development knowledge and the confidence to guide technical decisions across multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of RF, microwave and mmWave circuits, modules and subsystems.
- Take technical ownership of specification, architecture, simulation, realisation, verification and production release.
- Carry out system line-up analysis, cascaded performance calculations, tolerance analysis and design for manufacture.
- Develop and optimise RF solutions including amplifiers, filters, transceivers, frequency conversion stages, MMIC based modules and integrated subsystems.
- Use RF and EM simulation tools to support high frequency design, modelling and performance improvement.
- Work closely with PCB layout, mechanical, electronics, manufacturing and test teams to deliver reliable product designs.
- Lead design reviews, manage technical risks and support troubleshooting through development and production.
- Provide technical guidance to other engineers and support the development of best practice across the RF team.

Essential Requirements
- Significant experience in RF, microwave or mmWave circuit or system design.
- Strong understanding of high frequency engineering principles, RF architectures, gain and noise budgeting, impedance matching and practical RF implementation.
- Experience using tools such as Keysight ADS, Microwave Office, CST Studio Suite, EMPro or equivalent.
- Knowledge of system line up analysis, tolerance analysis, yield analysis, design verification and design for manufacture.
- Experience taking RF products from concept and simulation through to validation and production release.
- Ability to lead technical activities, influence engineering decisions and support other engineers.
- Degree qualified in RF, microwave, electronics, communications engineering or a closely related discipline.

Desirable Experience
- mmWave product development, ideally at Ka band, V band, E band or higher frequencies.
- RF power amplifier, transceiver, filter, module or subsystem design.
- MMIC integration and experience with GaN, GaAs or advanced semiconductor technologies.
- Telecommunications infrastructure, satellite communications, aerospace, defence or electronic warfare applications.
