Principal Software Engineer - Client Data
Location: London
The opportunity
The Robert Walters Consultancy Programme is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer to support a major technology transformation within a complex, regulated financial services environment.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an accomplished engineer who can design and deliver high-quality software securely, reliably and at pace. You will work across multiple teams and initiatives, helping to modernise business-critical platforms while improving engineering standards, operational resilience and developer capability.
You will bring sound technical judgement, calm leadership and a pragmatic approach to delivery. Priorities may change and deadlines can be demanding, so you must be comfortable navigating ambiguity, making informed trade-offs and maintaining quality and control under pressure.
What you'll do
- Design and develop scalable, secure and maintainable applications using technologies suited to the problem.
- Take ownership of the full software delivery lifecycle, from design and development through testing, release and implementation.
- Translate business outcomes, features and user stories into reliable, supportable software.
- Design and implement data pipelines and integration services across client, CRM and enterprise data platforms.
- Identify opportunities to improve data quality, operational efficiency and lifecycle processes through technology and automation.
- Work with delivery leads, engineering leads and architects to manage dependencies and address technical debt.
- Collaborate with product, UX and design specialists to create intuitive and efficient user experiences.
- Communicate technical options, risks and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Build and maintain infrastructure as code to support CI/CD and consistent environments.
- Champion secure engineering, automated testing, code quality, maintainability and operational readiness.
- Mentor engineers and provide constructive coaching and feedback to internal and partner teams.
- Contribute to shared engineering standards, reusable patterns and technical communities.
- Support the stability, maintenance and continued evolution of a complex application estate.
- Identify end-of-life software, upgrade requirements and security vulnerabilities, and drive their remediation.
- Participate actively in agile ceremonies, with a focus on outcomes, collaboration and continuous learning.

Essential experience
- Strong software engineering expertise in at least one of the following:
- C# and .NET
- Python
- Node.js
- React
- Extensive knowledge of software engineering principles, architectural patterns and modern development practices.
- A strong record of designing scalable, maintainable and resilient applications.
- Hands-on Microsoft Azure experience, including cloud-native development, data services, security, monitoring and integration.
- Practical Snowflake experience covering data modelling, ingestion, transformation, performance optimisation and security.
- Experience designing secure and reliable data pipelines and integration services.
- Strong knowledge of the complete software development lifecycle within an agile environment.
- Experience designing software for testability and using automated testing to improve quality and delivery confidence.
- The ability to think at system level and work effectively with developers, architects and business stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical recommendations to senior and non-technical audiences.
- Experience contributing across multiple initiatives and collaborating effectively between teams.

Desirable experience
- Experience within financial services, regulated organisations or other enterprise-scale operational environments.
- Front-end development experience using TypeScript, Next.js or React.
- Knowledge of test automation approaches such as TDD, BDD and shift-left testing.
- Familiarity with developer productivity tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or similar.
- Experience balancing immediate delivery priorities with longer-term platform health and strategy.
