Prisoner Escort Custody Officer (PCO) - Weymouth Magistrates Court
Location: Weymouth Magistrates Court, DT4 8BS
Join us in Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS) and play a key role in maintaining the safety and security of the justice system.
About the Role
As a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO), you will work as part of a dedicated team to deliver safe and secure escorting and custody services during court proceedings. Your responsibility will extend to detainees throughout court proceedings until their return to custody or release.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Escort detainees within the court premises, including courtrooms, cells, and facilities.
- Supervise detainees during hearings to ensure safety and security.
- Manage sensitive situations, maintaining strict confidentiality at all times.
- Support detainee welfare—providing access to food, drink, and wellbeing checks.
- Monitor prisoner behaviour and respond appropriately to incidents or risks.
- Conduct essential security searches to maintain a secure environment.
- Accurately complete all records and documentation related to detainees.
- Collaborate closely with court staff and partners to ensure smooth operations.
Requirements

Key requirements:
- Full UK driving license (Category B or B1) (desirable).
- Reasonable fitness to meet the physical demands of the role.
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Ability to remain calm, make decisions under pressure, and manage behavioural challenges.
- Confidence in managing situations and de-escalating conflict.
- Ability to work effectively within a team and accurately follow processes.
- Professionalism, integrity, and respect for confidentiality.

The position includes paid training through a 5½-week induction course, followed by ongoing support from experienced colleagues.
What We Offer
- Competitive Pay: Starting at £24,596 (35 hours per week), rising to £25,555 from 1st September 2026, with annual progression (Year 2: £26,191, Year 3: £26,684, Year 4: £27,180).
- Flexible working: 24/7 operation with shifts set on a 12-week rota. Must work full days; part-time is considered but limited.
- Holidays: 20 days + bank holidays (pro-rata), rising to 25 days after 7 years’ service.

Recruitment Process

Once selected, this role is subject to:
- Ministry of Justice Enhanced Level 2 security checks
- Enhanced DBS clearance
- Satisfactory employment references and occupational health checks. The role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and may include random alcohol and drug testing.

- Role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship under current UK policies.
- Must have right to work in the UK (visas must have 2 years or more remaining, with 1 year UK residency).
