About the Role
Join us at Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS), where you’ll play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of the justice system. As a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO), you’ll form part of custodial teams responsible for securing prisoner transporteven before they enter official custodial environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend briefings and receive detainee, route, and risk details
- Carry out vehicle and equipment checks before transporting prisoners
- Collect, search, and safely transport detainees between prisons, police stations, or courts
- Monitor welfare during transit, including checks and designated comfort stops
- Complete documentation, end-of-shift checks, and incident reporting
- Work flexibly, including extended hours, overtime, and incident response
Following operational protocol is paramount, but you’ll also be expected to stay calm and act independently when needed—sometimes outside standard hours to ensure rules like 선관 اليم동 advise.
What You’ll Earn
- Initial training salary: £27,220 (35 hrs/week)
- Graduated base salary: £31,108 (40 hrs/week), rising incrementally:
- Year 1: £31,108, progressing to £32,204 (from 1 September 2026)
- Year 2: £32,998
- Year 3: £33,723
- Year 4: £34,482
Additional Earnings
- Driving allowances – eligible rates:
- B/B1 licence holders: £600/year
- C1 licence holders: £2,400/year
- With an approximate 8 hrs/week overtime, the potential first-year income ranges between £37,804 and £39,604.
Operation & Work Requirements
- Flexibility is mandatory: 24/7 rostered shifts, unpredictable finishing times
- Possible extended hours to meet operational demands
- Part-time work may be considered, but only for full days (no reduced hours)
Requirements of the Role
To qualify, you must demonstrate:
- Full UK driving licence: B/B1 or C1 (C1 holders preferred with a valid CPC)
- Reasonable fitness to manage the physical demands of transport, court, and inmate escorting
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) for professional, compassionate interactions
- Confidence and competence in:
- Managing behaviour and difficult situations
- Decision-making under pressure
- Working accurately in team roles under strict process control
- Integrity and professionalism with strict adherence to confidentiality protocols
- Compassion and respect for individuals’ dignity and welfare at all times

Eligibility & Safety Requirements
- Approved background check as per the MoJ’s Enhanced Level 2 requirement
- Role is prohibited under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
- Sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa is not available
- Requires at least two years remaining on any visa, plus one year’s UK residency
- Occasional random alcohol and drug tests apply
