Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) in Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS)
📍 Location: New Southgate Vehicle Base, N11 1J
Join us to play a key role in helping keep the justice system safe and secure as a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) in our Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS). You’ll enjoy job security and stability, with competitive pay and flexible working across 24/7 shifts.
💰 Salary & Benefits
Initial Training Salary: £27,220 (35-hour work week)
Graduated Base Salary (progressive):
- £31,108 (40-hour work week), rising to £32,204 from 1st September 2026
- Year 2: £32,998
- Year 3: £33,723
- Year 4: £34,482
Additional Earnings (subject to terms):
- B/B1 Licence: £600 per year
- C1 Licence: £2,400 per year
- D Licence: £2,700 per year
Total Potential First-Year Income: Between £37,804 and £39,904 (combining base salary + average overtime: 8 hours per week).
Our 24/7 service requires flexibility. Shifts are set 12 weeks in advance, but finishing times may be unpredictable (extended hours for operational needs).
Part-time work is considered, but only across full working days—reduction of daily hours is not available.

👥 About the Role
As a PCO, you’ll work as part of a specialist team, supporting safe and secure prisoner transport between prisons, police stations and courts. Duties include:
- Escorting detainees in/around cells and courts;
- Performing vehicle & equipment checks;
- Monitoring welfare during transit;
- Ensuring confidentiality and importance of audit trail completion for all documentation;
- Maintaining professionalism during incidents requiring problem resolution and de-escalation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Attend pre-journey briefings, receive/verify detainee details, risks, and routes;
- Conduct routine vehicle searches and security checks;
- Transport detainees safely within designated premises or Immobilised Vehicular Units (IVUs);
- Comply with operational protocols under difficult conditions;
- Complete post-journey reports and archives.

🔧 Waiting List or Immediate Start? Full Training Included
While we don’t require prior experience, you’ll receive:
- **5½ weeks of paid training before joining an operational team,
- Ongoing support from experienced mentors.
🎯 What We Need from You
Trustworthiness, professionalism, and a commitment to safeguarding are central.
Essential Requirements:
- Full UK driving licence;
- Minimum B category (or enhanced/maintenance: C1/D where applicable);
- C1/D licence holders, ideally hold a valid Commercial Driver’s Licence (CPC/Tachograph);
- Good physical fitness for operational duties;
- Strong written & verbal communication skills for record-keeping and teamwork;
- Ability to remain calm under pressure when assessing risks;
- Competence in conflict resolution;
- Respect for confidentiality and strict adherence to safety procedures.
