Dual Badge Officer (DBO) – Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS)
Location: Buckingham Vehicle Base, MK18 1TN
About the Role
Join Serco as a Dual Badge Officer (DBO) in Prisoner Escort Custody Services, playing a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of the UK’s justice system. You’ll contribute to lawful custody processes, supporting the welfare and rights of detainees while ensuring safe movement through courts, prisons, and transfer centres.
Key Responsibilities
As a DBO, your primary duties include:
- Safe prisoner transport – Escorting adults, children, and young people to court and ensuring their secure transfer
- Risk management & operational compliance –
- Conducting pre-trip risk assessments
- Performing vehicle checks and maintenance
- Receiving and acting on operational briefings
- Detainee support & welfare –
- Maintaining professional conduct while escorting vulnerable individuals
- Effective communication with detainees, particularly children and young people
- Court support –
- Liaising with court staff and custody officers
- Supervising detainees at court
- Post-assignment paperwork and handover procedures
- De-escalation & safeguarding –
- Managing behavioural challenges whilst adhering to bureaucratic protocols
- Ensuring compliance with safeguarding policies for vulnerable persons
Salary & Benefits
- Competitive starting salary: £24,596 (35-hour week) during 5½-week paid training.
- Graduated base salary progression:
- Year 1 (Full-time): £28,109 → rising to £29,205 from 1st September 2026
- Year 2: £29,932
- Year 3: £30,496
- Year 4: £31,063
- Contracted hours: 40-hour week (later stages)
- Hourly earnings boost: With average 8 hours/week overtime, potential first-year income reaches ~£35,705
- Allowances:
- £600/year driving allowance
- £900/year specialist training allowance

Requirements

✔ Full valid UK driving licence (Category B/B1) ✔ Basic fitness for physical demands of the role ( escorting, route walking, lifting, stress handling) ✔ Exceptional written and verbal communication skills ✔ Ability to stay calm under pressure and de-escalate conflict effectively ✔ Strong adherence to process accuracy and teamwork ✔ Professionalism, integrity and confidentiality
Additionally, candidates must:
- Demonstrate safeguarding awareness with experience or willing willingness to complete training
- Have a genuine interest in working with children and vulnerable groups
