Our Small Modular Reactor technology combines decades of engineering expertise with innovative manufacturing approaches to create safe, reliable and affordable clean energy solutions. Joining us means contributing to one of the UK's most significant engineering programmes and helping shape the future of energy.
The Role
As a Probabilistic Safety Engineer, you are a technical professional in the Rolls-Royce SMR PSA team and contribute to a diverse team supporting the development of the Rolls-Royce SMR Power Station and the successful completion of first the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) and then later licensing and permitting processes. There will be an opportunity to support compliance with international licensing regimes.
What We'll Need You to Do
- Productive contribution to the development, review and maintenance of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) as part of the overall safety assessment programme.
- Provide support to engineering disciplines in their decision-making process enabling PSA results to be considered as an input to choose between different design options that are under consideration.
- Ensure that the appropriate level of quality and governance is applied to the PSA development and documentation.
- Represent the project at appropriate internal technical and project reviews along with relevant team members and occasionally at external meetings with the regulator and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning and the maintenance of RR SMR’s Nuclear Safety Culture.

What You'll Bring

- Experience with PWR-type reactor designs is ideal. Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (e.g. UK, IAEA, US) is an asset.
- Experience in the use of PSA to support the design of a Nuclear Power Plant (risk informed design).
- Experience in PSA topics including development and application of fault trees and event trees, reliability data analysis, internal and external hazards, risk monitor, and system dependency topics. Additionally, expertise in the interpretation of PSA results and their application is required.
- Expertise in specific topic areas as well as generalist knowledge is welcomed. Knowledge of data analysis will be taken under consideration.
- Familiarity with PSA software analysis tools, particularly Risk Spectrum PSA. Familiarity with Pheonix Architect will be considered. Familiarity with writing macros in Excel and knowledge of SQL is an advantage.
- Experience in the development of PSA and its documentation to ensure the documentation clearly and comprehensively documents the model and presents a range of results suitable for the target audience needs.
- Experience working closely with engineering teams to develop an integrated engineering and safety solution and in proactively communicating across teams
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Engineering, Maths, Physics or equivalent or significant relevant industry experience.
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status with a professional engineering, or equivalent, body.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
