About the Role

The UK water sector is undergoing a historic period of investment and transformation. As Egis accelerates its growth in the UK Water market, the team is expanding a high-performing Process Engineering capability to drive this evolution.

We are seeking applicants who wish to contribute meaningfully to major water and wastewater initiatives in both municipal and industrial sectors. Within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, you will shape technically robust, sustainable, and innovative solutions essential for nationally significant projects.

This is a rare opportunity to join at a critical stage of UK growth. As part of Egis’ team, you will develop and expand a process engineering capability rooted in global infrastructure expertise and a long-standing sector commitment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support process design packages across the following stages:

    • Feasibility
    • Optioneering
    • Concept
    • Outline design
    • Detailed design (for UK water/wastewater treatment projects)
  • Produce process-focused deliverables under senior guidance, including:

    • Process calculations
    • Mass balances
    • Basis of design reports
    • Process flow diagrams (PFDs)
    • P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
    • Sketches
    • Slides
    • Technical notes and datasheets
    • Schemes or schedules
  • Support treatment process selection, hydraulic/process capacity checks, and existing asset assessments

  • Engage in fieldwork activities:

    • Site visits
    • Asset surveys
    • Data collection (workshops with operators, suppliers, technology providers)

  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring alignment with teams focused on:

    • Mechanical design
    • EICA (Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation)
    • Civil/Structural design
    • Architectural expertise
    • Construction
  • Participate in design and operational safety studies, including:

    • HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study)
    • SWIFT (Subsurface Water Impermeability Focused Treatment)
    • DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations)
    • HAZmat Handling Analysis (HAC/HAP)
    • CDM/safety-by-design reviews
    • Safety certification
  • Use spreadsheets, process tools, and advanced outputs (data analysis & simulation) to inform evidence-based design decisions

  • Support contractor/supplier reviews, technical queries, commissioning strategies, performance testing, and handover as needed.


Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • A BEng or MEng (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Typically 4+ years of relevant process design experience in the water, wastewater, or biosolids/sludge treatment space.
  • Experience preparing technical deliverables, including:
    • Process calculations
    • Mass balances
    • Process flow diagrams
    • P&IDs
    • Basis of design reports & technical specifications
  • Strong grasp of:
    • Water/wastewater treatment processes
    • Process safety, CDM compliance, and safety-by-design principles
    • Quality assurance processes
  • Proficiency working within multidisciplinary teams to improve integrated, buildable, and operable treatment solutions
  • Strong digital capabilities, including:
    • Excel mastery
    • Process calculation, data analysis, or modelling tools
  • Willingness to travel to:
    • Operational works
    • Construction sites
    • Supplier facilities

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Deep expertise in:
    • Wastewater treatment
    • Clean water treatment
    • Sludge/bioresources recovery
    • Water reuse/recycling
    • Nutrient removal
    • Chemical dosing
    • Energy recovery
    • Low-carbon treatment
  • Familiarity with Framework Environments:
    • AMP 8, Water Industry National Eligible Projects (WINEP)
    • SROs (Significant Regional Opportunities)
    • D&B (Design & Build) contracts
    • Framework or alliance procurement models

  • Practical knowledge or awareness of process modelling/simulation software, such as:

    • BioWin
    • SUMO
    • Dynamizu
  • CGIAR-relevant accreditation: Progress towards IEng (Incorporated Engineer) or CEng (Chartered Engineer) status with a professional institution, preferably via the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)
