The Role
We are looking for a highly talented Programme Editor to work on Daytime on 5 — which includes the Jeremy Vine, Storm & Alexis and Matt Allwright programmes.
The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of news and current affairs as well as daytime debate shows. They must have first-class journalism and production skills and the ability to work under pressure. They should be full of ideas for debates and guests, as well as have the production flair to make sure their shows are engaging and entertaining.
We are offering a fixed term contract until 31 December 2026 and the full-time role would involve a five-day working week with a variable shift pattern which could include working the occasional Sunday. Weekday shifts are office based. We would welcome attachment opportunities within the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Taking control of planning and outputting a live two-hour programme
- Generating ideas for debates which are engaging and relevant to our audience
- Building rundowns, writing scripts, commissioning pictures and graphics, and taking charge of all elements of production including props and studio production
- Briefing presenters and guests thoroughly so they are fully prepared for the live show
- Getting additional guests to generate debates or news-making interviews
- Outputting the programme from the gallery and making editorial calls while on air
- Reacting to breaking news
- Overseeing a team of assistant producers and researchers — checking their work and giving them feedback
- Making decisions on legal issues, and taste and decency, in accordance with Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual

Key Requirements:
- A strong news sense and ability to tap into the day’s big talking points
- Creativity – the ability to make debates visually engaging
- Attention to detail - must be across the details of stories in the news each day
- Connection with viewers – must have a good understanding of what makes our shows distinctive from other daytime shows
- The ability to work and make decisions quickly and while under pressure
- Must be a good communicator – both written and verbal
- Excellent gallery skills
- A good contacts book
- A team player – someone who can share ideas and help their colleagues make the best shows every day
- A strong understanding of media law and the Ofcom code
