The Product Compliance Lead

The Product Compliance Lead is responsible for leading and coordinating all product compliance activities across MUJI Europe Limited (MEL). Acting as the central point of ownership, the role ensures that products comply with applicable regulatory requirements while driving efficient, standardised and cost-effective compliance processes across the business.

Working cross-functionally with Buying, Legal, Logistics, Creative, Operations and MUJI Japan, the role develops sustainable compliance frameworks, improves visibility of compliance costs and supports the long-term transition towards global compliance management led by Muji Japan.

Role & Responsibilities

Product Compliance Strategy & Governance

  • Own the overall product compliance roadmap across MEL.
  • Conduct and maintain a comprehensive product compliance audit.
  • Act as the central point of contact for all product compliance matters.
  • Support the transition towards a global compliance structure in partnership with RKJ.

  • Monitor changes in product regulations across all operating markets with support from external specialist partners (e.g. SGS).
  • Assess regulatory risks and translate legal requirements into practical business actions.
  • Ensure compliance activities are prioritised according to business risk and commercial impact.

Cross-functional Project Management

  • Coordinate compliance projects across Buying, Legal, Logistics, Creative and Operations.
  • Lead compliance projects from planning through implementation, driving standardised and cost-effective solutions.
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure timely delivery.

Product Labelling & Operational Compliance

  • Coordinate implementation of product labelling requirements across Europe.
  • Support artwork approvals, translations, packaging updates and operational implementation.
  • Work closely with Logistics to minimise warehouse rework and labelling costs.
  • Ensure operational compliance processes are scalable and consistently applied.

Cost Management

  • Develop KPIs to monitor total compliance expenditure.
  • Identify opportunities to optimise suppliers, processes and operational efficiency.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce compliance costs while maintaining regulatory standards.

Stakeholder Management

  • Partner with Muji Japan, suppliers and external specialists to deliver compliance solutions.
  • Provide practical compliance guidance to internal stakeholders.

Leadership Compentencies & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of product compliance, regulatory requirements and risk management.
  • Excellent project management and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • Commercial mindset with the ability to balance compliance requirements with operational efficiency.
  • Ability to influence and coordinate without direct authority.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
  • Fluent English required; additional European languages are an advantage.
