Product Design Engineer 1

Sedgefield
Salary: £26,939 - £34,939 per annum (dependent on experience)
Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract (up to 18 months)

The Role

We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic Product Design Engineer to support the delivery of a diverse portfolio of client projects with a focus on the medtech sector. Working as part of a collaborative engineering team, you will undertake and contribute to research activities, concept generation, product development, detailed design and technical problem-solving.

You will have the opportunity to work on multiple projects simultaneously, supporting clients from early-stage requirements capture through to design development and detailing for manufacture. As part of the role, you will engage with clients, suppliers and colleagues to ensure projects are delivered successfully and to the highest technical standards.

This role would particularly suit candidates with a background in Mechanical Design Engineering, Product Design Engineering or Industrial Design Engineering who are looking to develop their experience within a fast-paced innovation environment.

Key Responsibilities

Product Design & Development

  • Support research and technical investigation activities to inform product development projects.
  • Generate innovative concepts and engineering solutions to meet customer and project requirements.
  • Capture user, business and stakeholder needs and translate them into clear, verifiable design inputs and engineering requirements.
  • Support the generation and maintenance of design and development documentation in accordance with established design control processes.
  • Develop mechanical designs, assemblies and draft engineering drawings and BOMs using CAD software.
  • Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles throughout the design process.
  • Undertake prototype development, evaluation and iterative product improvement activities.
  • Produce and maintain accurate engineering documentation, drawings and bills of materials.

Project Delivery

  • Support the delivery of multiple client projects across different stages of the product development lifecycle.
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions to understand requirements and communicate progress.
  • Liaise with suppliers to understand component specifications, manufacturing processes and technical capabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to access specialist expertise and contribute to project success.
  • Support project planning, execution and reporting activities.

Engineering & Quality

  • Support design verification and validation activities through testing, analysis and evidence generation.
  • Develop test methods, protocols and reports to demonstrate compliance with design requirements.
  • Contribute to product risk management activities including hazard identification, risk assessment and implementation of risk controls.
  • Create and maintain engineering records, technical files and product development documentation in accordance with quality management system requirements.
  • Work within established engineering processes and regulated development frameworks (ISO 13485:2016) where applicable.

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Mechanical Design Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Industrial Design or a related engineering discipline.
  • Practical experience using CAD software to create mechanical designs and assemblies and good understanding of engineering drawings, tolerancing and technical communication.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles.
  • Knowledge of structured engineering design processes and the ability to generate clear and accurate technical documentation, reports and engineering records.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with clients, suppliers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and information gathering.
  • Ability to manage priorities across multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience working within a product development, design engineering or mechanical engineering environment.

Desirable Requirements

  • Understanding of engineering change control processes.
  • Awareness of ISO 13485 design and development processes.
  • Understanding of medical device usability, risk management or regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working within a quality management system.
  • Experience of prototyping, testing and experimental activities.
  • Exposure to supplier management and external stakeholder engagement.
  • Formal CAD training or demonstrable practical CAD experience.

In this role, you will become a trusted member of the Product Design team, supporting the delivery of innovative client projects through strong technical capability, effective stakeholder engagement and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You'll develop your engineering expertise while gaining valuable experience working directly with clients, suppliers and multidisciplinary teams.
