This family-owned business delivers engineering services including product development and contract manufacturing, supporting clients from concept through production. Role Description
The Product Development Engineer is a part-time (16 to 20 hours a week initially and then ramping up), on-site role based in Wickwar. This role involves leading and supporting product development projects from initial concept through design, prototyping, testing, and preparation for manufacturing. Day-to-day tasks include:

- Creating and reviewing mechanical designs
- Performing engineering analyses
- Conducting research and development activities
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to refine requirements and specifications
The engineer will prepare technical documentation, support contract manufacturing partners, and contribute to continuous improvement of design and development processes. The role also requires close interaction with clients to understand their needs, present design solutions, and ensure that products meet performance, cost, and sustainability objectives.
The product development engineer is also fully responsible for:
- Pre-sales marketing
- Bidding
- Grant proposals writing
- Submissions
- Managing the company's CRM/leads management tools set
In addition to the hands-on work with lab-scale development test equipment and performing FEA CFD simulations independently, the role includes:
- Passion for drone pilot training/drone services including fixed wing platforms
- Ability to easily switch between the research environment and the production shop floor
- Interfacing with partners and service providers in the UK and Overseas

Qualifications
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, solve complex problems, and make evidence-based decisions.
- Hands-on experience in Research and Development (R&D), including experimentation, prototyping, and validation of new concepts.
- Background in Mechanical Engineering, with knowledge of materials, mechanics, manufacturing processes, and CAD tools.
- Experience in Product Development and Product Design, including taking products from concept through to production-ready status.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Familiarity with sustainability principles, carbon accounting, or environmentally conscious design is an advantage.
- Ability to work on-site in Wickwar, collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and communicate clearly with clients and colleagues.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate technical documentation.
