Are you an experienced Senior Software Engineer who wants more influence over what gets built and how?
Would you enjoy owning a live SaaS product today, while growing into the technical leader of tomorrow?
Looking for a role where you can still write plenty of code rather than stepping away from hands-on engineering?
Our client is a growing technology business with an established B2B SaaS platform used by customers every day. Following significant investment in the product, they are now building the team that will support the next stage of growth.
This is a particularly influential appointment. You’ll join as the first dedicated in-house engineering hire, working closely with the CTO and taking meaningful ownership of an established production platform.
Initially, this is very much a hands-on role: building features, improving existing functionality, solving technical challenges and getting to know the codebase inside out. Longer term, there is an opportunity to help recruit, mentor and lead the engineering team around you.
If you’re a strong Spring Boot and React developer who wants the scope to become a technical leader without giving up the engineering you enjoy, this could be a brilliant next move.
Why This Role is Great
This isn’t a role where you’ll inherit a job title and simply maintain someone else’s processes. You’ll have the opportunity to shape them.
You’ll get to:
- Own meaningful parts of a live SaaS platform, working across backend, web and mobile applications.
- Build and ship end-to-end, taking ideas through design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing improvement.
- Make your mark on an established codebase, improving it pragmatically while keeping customers and delivery front of mind.
- Influence technical direction alongside the CTO, with input into architecture, standards, tooling and engineering priorities.
- Shape the product roadmap, turning customer and business requirements into realistic, deliverable technical plans.
- Strengthen the engineering foundations, including testing, CI/CD, observability, performance and release processes.
- Get close to customers and stakeholders, understanding how people use the product and helping turn feedback into valuable features.
- Own releases with confidence, overseeing testing and deployment across development and live environments.
- Build the engineering culture, establishing approaches to code review, branching, documentation and releases that future developers can build upon.
- Grow into leadership, helping define future engineering hires before mentoring and leading the team as it expands.
- Gain exposure beyond pure development, including communicating roadmap progress, priorities and technical considerations to senior stakeholders.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

About You
You’ll be joining a business where technical breadth, curiosity and sound judgement matter.
At the heart of the role is Spring Boot (Java/Kotlin) and React, so you’ll have the chance to build on strong experience in these technologies while broadening your exposure across mobile development, cloud infrastructure and SaaS architecture.
The wider technology environment includes:
- Backend: Spring Boot, Java/Kotlin, JPA and Azure SQL
- Web: React
- iOS: Native Swift
- Android: Native Kotlin
- Cloud & Platform: Microsoft Azure, including Blob Storage, Service Bus and Web PubSub
- Architecture: Multi-tenant SaaS
- Supporting technologies: SendGrid and modern deployment, testing and monitoring practices
Nobody is expected to arrive as an expert in every technology. What matters is having the engineering depth to make an impact quickly and the curiosity to become comfortable across the wider platform.

What Could Make You a Great Fit
Our client’s wishlist includes someone who has built and shipped production software over a substantial period, ideally around eight years or more, with particularly strong experience in Spring Boot (Java/Kotlin) and React.
Experience within compliance-led or regulated environments could be useful, but it certainly isn’t the only route into this opportunity. If your background gives you comparable or transferable experience, we’d encourage you to apply.
What Could Your First Year Look Like?
Your first few months will be about getting close to the product: understanding the architecture and codebase, taking ownership of priority work and shipping useful improvements.
As your knowledge grows, you’ll become a trusted technical owner for significant areas of the platform, while helping improve the engineering foundations and influencing what the business builds next.
Looking further ahead, the opportunity develops into something bigger: helping recruit and lead a growing engineering team while setting technical direction alongside the CTO.
You don’t need to tick every box. If the opportunity sounds exciting and your experience is broadly transferable, apply today and tell us what you could bring to the role.
Diversity & Inclusion
We and our client are committed to creating an inclusive recruitment experience and welcoming applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences. We value different perspectives and encourage you to apply even if your career journey or experience doesn’t match every point in the Wishlist. If you require reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process, please let us know.
