Overview
The Product Manager - Digital Software will support the development and improvement of website-building products, including WordPress themes, blocks, patterns, and templates. The role is responsible for assigned product discovery, requirements, prioritization, delivery, and ongoing evaluation.
The position requires practical website-building experience and the ability to translate client needs and product opportunities into clear, actionable work. Product strategy and overall roadmap direction are established by senior product leadership, with the Product Manager contributing client, market, and product insights to inform those decisions.
The Product Manager will collaborate with Engineering, Design, Support, Marketing, Product, and other stakeholders to deliver product improvements within established priorities, processes, and delegated authority.
Responsibilities
Product Planning and Delivery
- Lead discovery, definition, and delivery of assigned product features and improvements across themes, blocks, patterns, templates, and related website-building capabilities.
- Develop clear product requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and supporting documentation.
- Maintain and prioritize the product backlog for assigned areas based on client needs, product strategy, available resources, and business priorities.
- Break complex or ambiguous problems into clear, actionable deliverables and identify key questions, dependencies, and risks.
- Contribute client and market insights, options, and recommendations to roadmap and planning discussions.
Product and Domain Knowledge
- Develop and maintain working knowledge of WordPress, including the block editor, patterns, templates, themes, and site-wide design settings.
- Use the products directly to understand client workflows, usability considerations, and areas for improvement.
- Monitor relevant competitive and industry developments and incorporate applicable insights into product decisions.
- Consider factors such as performance, responsive design, accessibility, compatibility, and potential client impact when evaluating product changes.
Client Discovery and Research
- Gather client insights from support interactions, community discussions, reviews, feature requests, client conversations, and product data.
- Participate in client interviews, usability testing, feedback sessions, prototypes, beta programs, and other validation activities as appropriate.
- Identify recurring client needs and use evidence to inform product recommendations and priorities.

Product Development and Release
- Collaborate with Engineering and Design throughout development to clarify requirements, resolve questions, and maintain alignment.
- Participate in relevant planning, refinement, review, and retrospective activities.
- Support release readiness, including acceptance testing, compatibility considerations, documentation, release notes, and support communications.
- Evaluate product performance after release and recommend improvements based on available data and client feedback.
Commercial and Product Performance
- Develop an understanding of relevant product business models, including pricing, packaging, renewals, and free and paid offerings.
- Consider client and business impact when evaluating and prioritizing product opportunities.
- Support pricing, packaging, go-to-market, and product launch activities led by senior product and marketing teams.
- Monitor relevant product KPIs, such as adoption, activation, conversion, retention, support contacts, and client satisfaction.
- Support product instrumentation and reporting and use available data to inform product decisions.
Client and Community Engagement
- Maintain awareness of client needs through regular engagement with support channels, community forums, and other client feedback sources.
- Consider the needs of different client groups, including individual site builders, professional designers, agencies, and other users.
- Monitor relevant WordPress and web-development developments that may affect the products.
- Participate in appropriate industry and community forums and represent the company professionally in accordance with applicable company policies and communications guidelines.
Professional Development
- Develop product management capabilities in areas such as client discovery, prioritization, written communication, data analysis, and commercial decision-making.
- Seek and incorporate feedback to improve product knowledge, effectiveness, and decision-making.
- Demonstrate increasing proficiency and responsibility as experience and capability develop.
- Perform other related duties as assigned based on organizational and business needs.

Required Qualifications
- Experience in product management or a related role involving product development, web development, design, technical support, quality assurance, project coordination, or comparable responsibilities.
- Hands-on experience building or managing websites using WordPress, including practical familiarity with the block editor, themes, and site or page design.
- Ability to communicate clearly and develop requirements, user stories, summaries, or other documentation that support effective execution.
- Ability to organize ambiguous problems into structured, prioritized, and actionable work.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Design, and other cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to gather and incorporate client feedback into product or project decisions.
- Ability to understand and interpret product data and use available information to support recommendations.
- Ability to evaluate user experience and product considerations and communicate clear recommendations.
- Willingness to develop knowledge of the commercial and business aspects of product management.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the WordPress block editor, including block patterns, template editing, and site-wide design settings.
- Familiarity with page builders, block plugins, theme frameworks, or comparable website-building technologies.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.
- Familiarity with web performance and accessibility considerations.
- Experience working with agencies, freelancers, small businesses, or other organizations that build websites.
- Experience with plugin or theme products, including free and paid offerings, licensing, and product updates.
- Experience supporting beta programs, client research, product launches, or similar product activities.
- Participation in WordPress, web development, design, or related professional communities.
