Product Owner – Banking

Location: Northampton, UK

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Product Owner with strong Banking / Financial Services experience to take ownership of product vision, roadmap, backlog prioritisation and delivery. The successful candidate will work closely with business stakeholders, technology teams, architects, delivery teams and risk/control functions to deliver products and capabilities aligned with customer needs and business objectives.

The role requires strong understanding of banking products, regulated environments, Agile delivery and stakeholder management. Product Owners in banking environments are typically accountable for product vision, lifecycle, backlog prioritisation, delivery outcomes and adherence to risk and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and communicate the product vision, strategy and roadmap.
  • Define, manage and prioritise the product backlog based on business value, customer needs and strategic priorities.
  • Translate business requirements into clear Epics, Features, User Stories and Acceptance Criteria.
  • Work closely with Business Analysts, Scrum Masters, Developers, Architects, Testers and other technology teams.
  • Engage with senior business and technology stakeholders to understand priorities, dependencies and delivery risks.
  • Make informed decisions on scope, priorities, sequencing and trade-offs.
  • Lead backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews and other Agile ceremonies where required.
  • Ensure the development team has clear, actionable and measurable requirements.
  • Manage product releases and ensure successful delivery against agreed objectives.
  • Monitor product performance, customer outcomes and business value, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure products and solutions comply with banking regulations, risk frameworks, security standards and internal controls.
  • Work closely with Risk, Compliance, Legal, Information Security and Governance teams.
  • Manage dependencies across multiple business and technology teams.
  • Support transformation, process improvement and digitalisation initiatives within the banking environment.
  • Provide regular updates to senior stakeholders on roadmap, delivery progress, risks, issues and dependencies.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in Product Ownership / Product Management / Business Analysis within Banking or Financial Services.
  • Strong understanding of banking products, processes and regulated environments.
  • Proven experience owning and managing a product backlog and roadmap.
  • Strong experience with Agile / Scrum methodologies.
  • Excellent knowledge of Epics, Features, User Stories, Acceptance Criteria and MVP definition.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including experience working with senior business and technology stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into clear and prioritised product requirements.
  • Experience working with cross-functional technology teams.
  • Strong understanding of risk, compliance, governance and regulatory requirements within banking.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience managing competing priorities, dependencies and delivery risks.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience across Digital Banking, Payments, Cards, Lending, Retail Banking, Commercial Banking or Core Banking.
  • Experience with banking transformation or technology modernisation programmes.
  • Knowledge of APIs, microservices and digital platforms.
  • Experience with Jira / Confluence or similar Agile delivery tools.
  • Experience working in large-scale banking transformation programmes.
  • Product Owner / Scrum certifications such as CSPO, PSPO or SAFe Product Owner.
  • Experience working within highly regulated financial services environments.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a confident, commercially aware and delivery-focused Product Owner with proven Banking experience. They should be comfortable challenging priorities, making decisions, managing senior stakeholders and working closely with technology teams to deliver measurable business and customer outcomes.
