The role is responsible for leading on Hazard identification, Risk analysis, and the development of the scheme of safety alongside subsystem Technical Authorities. Key to the role is providing engineering support and expertise to the Technical Authority, enabling them to create a safe product.
The role will be responsible for the creation of a safety case argument, built upon a foundation of assurance evidence and other artefacts. The overarching goal of the product safety team is to ensure that hazards are either eliminated or that risk is managed so far as is reasonably practicable.
The position holder will be required to:

- Coordinate and lead customer engagement workshops, agreeing evidence requirements, preparing evidence packs, and producing the safety submission.
- Conduct the product safety assessment for major subsystems or key complex technologies, ensuring risk is understood and appropriately managed.
- Lead updates to domain System Design Safety Assessments (SDSAs) to support programme safety case refreshes, ensuring product safety risks progress to the required maturity levels, and coordinating input from relevant contributors.
- Manage engagement with a broad range of stakeholders across the supplier base, BAE, Ministry of Defence, and Royal Navy to support progress to safety certification.
- Provide engineering support and specialist expertise to the Technical Authority to enable the delivery of a safe, compliant product.
- Develop safety case arguments supported by robust assurance evidence and associated artefacts.
- Act as both a thought leader and facilitator in ensuring risks are managed to levels that are as low as reasonably practicable.
- Responsible for product safety assessment against major subsystems or key complex technologies.
- Verify and assure the quality and accuracy of submissions to the Hazard Log.
- Produce monthly reporting and statistics on the contents of the Hazard Log.
- Plan, organise, and facilitate HAZIDs and review meetings and contribute to other HAZIDs when required.
- Work collaboratively with the TA teams and embedded Safety Engineers to gather, validate, and present product safety evidence to support the safety case and acceptance via the Requirements and Acceptance Team.
- Take ownership of all product safety activities within the allocated equipment area, including the delegation, tasking, and review of the work completed by junior engineers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
