About the Role
Oxford Instruments is seeking a Product Scientist to join our Electron Microscopy team. This role is ideal for a scientifically curious and commercially aware individual with strong hands-on experience in electron microscopy and EDS/EDX microanalysis.
As a Product Scientist, you will act as a technical expert supporting the development, demonstration, and commercial success of our Electron Microscopy solutions. Working closely with Product Management, R&D, Applications, Sales, and Marketing teams, you will help translate customer needs into product improvements, generate application data, support product launches, and deliver technical expertise to customers and colleagues around the world.
This position offers the opportunity to work with leading-edge analytical technologies and engage with customers across a range of industries including semiconductors, advanced materials, metallurgy, mining, batteries, and academic research. Experience within the semiconductor sector would be highly desirable, but it is not essential.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Expertise
- Act as a subject matter expert for Electron Microscopy and EDS/EDX microanalysis.
- Provide scientific and technical input to product development and innovation projects.
- Support evaluation and testing of new hardware and software developments.
- Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering teams to guide product improvements and future developments.
- Contribute technical expertise throughout the product lifecycle.
Customer & Application Support
- Conduct customer demonstrations and proof-of-concept studies.
- Analyse customer samples using electron microscopy and EDS/EDX techniques.
- Produce clear, professional technical reports and application data.
- Support customer-facing technical discussions and communicate complex scientific concepts effectively.
- Assist in resolving technical and application-related customer challenges.

Sales & Marketing Enablement
- Develop application notes, technical presentations, sales tools, and training materials.
- Generate scientific content to support product launches and marketing campaigns.
- Work closely with Sales teams to demonstrate product value and technical differentiation.
- Support exhibitions, conferences, webinars, and customer events.
Training & Knowledge Sharing
- Deliver technical training to internal teams and global Applications Specialists.
- Share best practices and application knowledge across the wider organization.
- Support the development of technical capability within the Electron Microscopy team.
Market Insight & Product Strategy
- Gather customer feedback and market intelligence.
- Monitor industry trends and emerging applications.
- Identify opportunities for new product capabilities and application development.
- Contribute to product roadmaps through customer and market insights.
About You
Essential Requirements
- MSc, PhD, or equivalent industry experience in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong practical experience using Electron Microscopy techniques for materials characterisation.
- Significant experience using EDS/EDX for microanalysis, data interpretation, and problem solving.
- Experience analysing and interpreting complex microscopy and microanalysis data.
- Strong scientific reporting, presentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary and global teams.
- Willingness to travel internationally as required.

Desirable Requirements
- Experience working within the semiconductor industry.
- Experience with additional materials characterisation techniques.
- Experience supporting scientific instrumentation or analytical products.
- Customer-facing experience in applications, technical support, product management, or commercial roles.
- Knowledge of advanced materials, metallurgy, batteries, mining, or related application areas.
