Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The apprentice will gain practical, hands-on experience supporting the manufacture, assembly and testing of GUL’s specialist engineering products. Typical tasks will include:
- Assembling electrical, electronic and mechanical components and products
- Soldering electronic components, wires and connectors
- Using general workshop tools and equipment safely
- Following engineering drawings, assembly instructions and manufacturing procedures
- Testing completed assemblies and assisting with fault finding
- Carrying out quality checks to ensure products meet the required standards
- Supporting the production team with day-to-day manufacturing activities
- Assisting engineers with the development and testing of new products when required
- Using computers to record information and support production activities
- Communicating with colleagues and, where required, suppliers
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment
As their skills and experience develop, the apprentice will be given greater responsibility and will be able to complete a range of engineering tasks independently.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Read and extract relevant engineering and manufacturing related data and information (such as workplans or project plans, schedules, drawings, specifications, production data, quality reports, costing data, statistical information) drawing accurate conclusions and making informed decisions.
- Use project management tools, such as Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT), stakeholder matrices, risk mapping, radar chart and summary risk profiles.
- Use problem solving tools such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Process Failure Modes Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Fishbone, Practical Problem Solving (PPS) and Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP).
- Analyse and interpret data and information in order to generate manufacturing engineering documentation such as Parts Per Million (PPM) quality adherence, cost analysis and test data.
- Communicate using the appropriate method for the audience such as, formal and informal presentations, written reports, verbal, electronic, social media and incorporating relevant and appropriate data or metrics.
- Use the approved process and quality compliance procedure to create or amend engineering or manufacturing documentation.
- Use lean tools and techniques, such as Six Sigma, 8 Wastes, Workplace organisation such as 5S's (sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain), Kaizen and Poka-Yoke (Error proofing).
- Apply documentation control processes and procedures such as format, location, access, authorisation.
- Use financial planning, recording and review processes and documentation such as departmental budgets, estimating, cost control, cost forecasting, and investment appraisal.
- Use computer based software systems or packages such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Data Analytics and Databases.

Training schedule
The training programme will be tailored to the apprentice’s entry level, existing qualifications and experience.
Depending on their starting point, the apprentice will work towards relevant engineering qualifications alongside practical, on-the-job training at Guided Ultrasonics Ltd.
For school leavers, the programme would typically include:
Year 1: BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering – full-time college training for approximately 40 weeks.
Year 2: BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering – typically one day per week at college, with the remaining time spent gaining practical experience at GUL.
Years 3 and 4: Training towards a BTEC Level 4/HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering – typically one day per week at college, alongside practical workplace training at GUL.
More advanced learners who already hold suitable Level 3 engineering qualifications, or equivalent, may be able to enter the programme directly at Year 3 and begin working towards the Level 4/HNC qualification. Entry level will be assessed based on the candidate’s existing qualifications and experience.

College training is expected to take place at Kingston College, although alternative colleges may be considered depending on the apprentice’s circumstances and entry level.
Throughout the apprenticeship, workplace training, mentoring and practical experience will be provided by experienced members of the GUL engineering and production teams.

GCSE in:

The apprenticeship is designed to develop you into a qualified Engineering Technician. After completing your HNC and reaching Technician status, there are opportunities to continue developing within GUL. This could include further company-sponsored study towards an HND or engineering degree, as well as progression into more senior or specialised technical and engineering roles. The exact career path will depend on your performance, interests and the opportunities available within the business.
