The Role

Our site in Wolverhampton is looking for a Shift Team Leader to work on a four on four off basis, working two days two nights.

IPL Schoeller (Wolverhampton) are seeking a highly motivated Shift Team Leader will manage the designated production shift and ensure that all personnel work to their full potential to produce high quality products whilst adhering to health and safety practices. Customer and company targets must be met at all times. You will be responsible for managing any employee who is assigned to a designated shift colour. You will take ownership for all your employees and will become the natural leader for your shift, the role will include people management and reporting requirements.

The Team Leader will work four on four off, two days 06:45 - 19:00 and two nights 18:45 - 07:00.

As a Team Leader at IPL Wolverhampton:

  • Leading by example, ensuring a safe and efficient workplace is maintained at all times.
  • Ensuring health and safety, production volume, quality and product safety standards maintained.
  • As the Shift Team Leader you will be involved in continuous improvement within the production operation.
  • To schedule and utilise the required labour for achievement of the production plan.
  • Responsible for allocating the team to machinery and break management.
  • Ensuring that all labour is allocated in accordance with the competencies signed off on the skills matrix.
  • Review the downtime analysis data provided as part of an on-going continuous improvement initiative.
  • Identifying and facilitating any training needs and be actively involved with people management.
  • To drive improvement in planned machine rates, manning levels and to minimise hand over times.
  • Ensuring the team obtain and comply with health and safety policies and procedures at all times to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Liaising and coordinating with support functions to progress issues concerning production planning, resource and skill allocation to ensure delivery of products to schedule within all relevant quality specifications.
  • Communicating with the teams by utilising the visual management, delivery shift briefs with focus on quality, cost and delivery and gathering ideas for improvement.
  • Undertaking performance management and taking responsibility for team members, conducting appraisals and giving direction to aid good people performance.
  • Ensuring that non-conformances are challenged and counter measures are agreed and implemented.
  • Leading and motivating the team to create a high performance culture where improvement suggestions are embraced.
  • Report and act upon machinery breakdowns to Shift Technicians and Engineers.
  • Contribute in the improvement of working procedures by constantly looking for solutions to ensure the best productivity results for the employees machinery and ensuring compliance with procedures, operating instructions and work instructions.
  • Taking ownership and responsibility for production shift KPIs which will include; Output vs Target, manning levels, scrap, RG usage, safety, quality and house keeping.
  • Adhere to the production plan whilst reporting and escalating deviances from the plan.
  • Working closely with management to escalate production issues, machine breakdown or general production concerns.
  • Responsible for accurately completing all compliance paperwork, daily shift reports, HR attendance reports or any other documentation or reporting as and when required by the business.
  • Maintaining a consistent production flow ensuring employees are fully trained and working efficiently.
  • Authority and responsibility to ensure the shift is fully staffed.
  • Reporting and managing employee welfare and accidents whilst on shift.
  • You will have a responsibility to manage the Technical staff, managing and prioritising machinery faults and breakdowns and assisting where possible.
  • Ensuring production are using the correct materials directed by the production plan, RG & MB Management including raw material supply and flow.
  • Responsible for machine uptime, ensuring the measure of the system reliability is maintained as much as possible.
  • Reporting machine discrepancies and ensuring efficient running of all materials where possible.
  • Detailed reporting will be required for any issues, discrepancies across the shift this may include; people management, stock, machinery etc.
  • Escalate any quality concerns or machine issues to relevant staff, done via raising non-conformances or confidential reporting when necessary.
  • Managing manpower resource effectively to support the delivery of production whilst maintaining manufacturing principles.
  • Drive company absence and sickness procedure to ensure maximum attendance levels.
  • Deal with all personnel issues on shift including interaction with HR and Senior Management.
  • Responsible for all training required including the delivery of all company policies and procedures within your team.
  • Managing time and attendance within company procedures.
  • Carrying out incident, accident and non-conformity investigations and associated reporting and action closure.
  • Motivating and coaching the team to operational success.
  • Monitoring the completion of tasks and ensuring good performance and record on appropriate systems.
  • Consistently promoting high standard through personal example and ensure this practise is rolled out throughout the team so that each member of team understand the standards and behaviours expected of them.
  • Communicating KPIs from the strategic annual plan so that each employee is aware.
  • Ensuring KPIs are met by working to the overall plan, including management of and reporting.
  • Providing product expertise within the team, and respond to production queries.
  • Working positively with support functions to fully define the processes, procedures and controls relevant to team activities, whilst providing support and input to continuous improvement actives within the team.
  • Responsible for carrying out employee appraisals, probations reviews, performance reviews, one to one meetings, absence and attendance reviews, investigation meetings with the guidance and perhaps support of Human Resources or Senior Management.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring all return to work interviews and paperwork are completed for any absences within your team.
  • The authority to ensure the shift is fully staffed to achieve targets and bottles produced, this will include monitoring employee holidays, shift swaps, day to day changes to the staffing rota, managing and controlling agency usage.
  • Ensuring all employees comply with Health and Safety policies and procedures whilst ensuring the company handbook and employment contracts abided to.
  • Sole autonomy to action and procedure with disciplinary and capability procedures and grievance procedures with the guidance and support of Human Resources and Senior Management.
  • Measurable objective and targets may include; 0 product safety complaints, machine down time (direct or indirect efficiency) to be less than 2%, scrap material 1% or lower, operating within Health and Safety and key engineering.

Desirable qualifications and experience:

  • Displays safe and considerate working practices.
  • Have experience in fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience of working within a manufacturing environment as a Team Leader or similar supervisory role.
  • Lean manufacturing or production management (Online or Open University)
  • GCSE Grade C and above or equivalent Maths and English.
  • ILM or equivalent certificate in Leadership.
  • Able to work under pressure in a fast-growing business and meet tight deadlines.
  • Understanding of health and safety processes and safe methods of working.
  • Displays safe and considerate working practices.
  • Fully computer literate and competent using all Microsoft packages including Outlook.
