Professional Indemnity (PI) Underwriter
We are currently looking for a PI Underwriter to be based in Birmingham or Manchester on a full-time basis, reporting into the Head of Financial Lines Underwriting.
You will achieve and maintain a profitable, well-balanced, and growing portfolio with allocated intermediaries and customers to assist in meeting long-term trading objectives of the Company. You will provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to less experienced underwriting staff.
Responsibilities
- Proactively develop and convert new and existing business opportunities through regular in-market engagement with allocated intermediaries and customers, managing cases end-to-end to deliver business plans and drive profitable growth aligned with the Company’s trading strategy;
- Identify, define, and close business opportunities, seeking input from other staff where appropriate to ensure swift and effective handling of business proposals, securing business for the Company;
- Influence broker behaviour and placement strategies by providing clear appetite, pricing insight, and feedback, positioning the Company as a preferred trading partner;
- Manage high-level complex multinational accounts;
- Make effective on-site decisions, within delegated authority, for allocated intermediaries to ensure work is completed efficiently;
- Work with the Underwriting and Strategic Relationship Management Team to develop strong relationships with allocated intermediaries, balancing intermediary needs with the Company’s trading objectives to deliver profitable and balanced trading growth;
- Deliver technical presentations when required;
- Plan and process own work to assist the team in meeting customer service and credit control targets;
- Act as a reference point on all issues for allocated intermediaries, customers, or less experienced staff to ensure a high level of customer service is delivered;
- Assist in maintaining a balanced and high-quality portfolio by optimising the use of gathered information;
- Help drive forward good Conduct for the business to deliver the best outcomes for customers and policyholders;
- Understand all appropriate lines of escalation and the responsibilities of the Product Conduct Risk Strategy Group (PCRSG), Underwriting & Claims Sub Committee (UCSC), ExCo, and Board for Conduct Risk;
- Undertake other duties as directed within the scope of the job function.

Knowledge and Skills
- High level of underwriting knowledge, including technical underwriting, philosophy, and company trading strategy;
- Proven ability to trade, negotiate, and influence underwriting outcomes;
- Strong market presence and external networking capability with intermediaries and customers;
- Ability to build long-term broker and client partnerships beyond transactional interactions;
- In-depth knowledge of the local market;
- Effective interpretation and use of management information;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Established internal relationships with Line of Business Managers, team members, Underwriters, SRM team, Claims Department, the Syndicate, and Great Lakes.
