Sheffield Register Office
Sheffield Register Office is seeking to recruit two part-time Professional Officers to join the team at Sheffield Register Office, based at the Town Hall. We are looking for confident, approachable and professional individuals who enjoy engaging with members of the public and delivering a high standard of customer service.
Application Information
- Location: Sheffield City Council, Town Hall, various off-site locations including children’s hubs and licensed premises.
- Training Provider: Experience with working within the registration service would be beneficial but not essential as full training is given internally.
About The Role
As a Professional Officer, you will support the delivery of an efficient, effective, and customer-focused public service for the citizens of Sheffield and visitors to the city. Sheffield Register Office has a statutory responsibility to ensure that births, deaths, marriages, and a range of other registration duties are carried out in accordance with the requirements and compliance standards set by the General Register Office (GRO).
Although the role is based at the Town Hall, you will be required to travel to other locations across Sheffield, including family hubs to attend appointments and licensed premises, to support the delivery of ceremonies.
The role involves working within the relevant legislative framework, including the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953, the Marriage Act 1949, and the Civil Partnership Act 2004, among others.
Our core service is delivered Monday to Friday. However, weekend working may be required to support the delivery of ceremonies. Registrars in Sheffield may be required to work one weekend per month where cover cannot be provided through volunteers as part of their contract.
Successful part-time employees will work alternate weeks from each other:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
