Job Overview
To have responsibility for one of the modules for the Moorfields Professional Qualifications (College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications) The role includes running the module including teaching, assessment and student support, keeping modules up to date as well as partaking in other academic module lead duties.
The Module Lead will play a role in delivering the taught qualifications. S/he will be accountable to the Professional Qualifications Section Lead and the Head of Optometry Education. S/he will be responsible, in conjunction with the Head of Optometry Education, Professional Qualifications Section lead, for the organisation and management of the module and for the academic experience of the students on the qualifications. The post holder will develop the module curriculum in line with the specification approved by the Head of Optometry Education to include learning outcomes of relevant ophthalmic frameworks. The modules will be delivered under the direction of the Head of Optometry Education, short Professional Qualifications Lead.
The Module Lead has overall responsibility for the development and management of the delivery of the module, assessment and feedback and should meet with the Section Lead and dedicated Administrators for both the professional courses, to go over processes and procedures for relevant sections of the module.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The Post Holder Should
- Ensure the effective and efficient delivery, assessment, and ongoing development of the modules, in compliance with internal procedures and regulations and professional body accreditation, if applicable.
- Bring to the attention of the Section Lead any concerns relating to the students’ academic work or general welfare.
- Be familiar with internal education and College accreditation guidelines, particularly those pertaining to staff and student welfare and the external requirements for assessment and accreditation of the module.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Leadership
- To lead and coordinate core module teaching and assessment to academic requirements aligned with the Intended Learning Outcomes set out in the curriculum map.
- To lead annual curriculum module review and on-going development.
- To work collaboratively with the Head of Optometry Education, Professional Qualifications Section lead.
- To engage in appropriate scholarship in the particular discipline to support excellence in research and evidence-based teaching in the portfolio.
- Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.
Education
Curriculum (in consultation with the Section Lead)

To coordinate and contribute to module teaching and developing the module syllabus; ensuring the content aligns with the curriculum and the Intended Learning Outcomes set out in the Curriculum Map and draw on a variety of teaching methods including online teaching, with synchronous small group teaching and tutorials.

To ensure the development and provision of core course material for the module is up to date and contributing authors align to the curriculum map, including on-line resources and e-learning (Student Handbook if applicable, Module Lead Handbook, Extend pages and all publicity materials). Timetable for these updates to be decided in conjunction with the section Lead and the dedicated Administrator for the module.

Prepare high quality teaching materials in relevant subject area, planning module delivery, communication with students to develop critical thinking and practical skills.

Module leads are responsible for maintaining professional accreditation where applicable.

Forwarding dates and assessment landscape to the dedicated Administrator for the module at least 6 months in advance of the programme commencing.

Provide a title and brief description of the lecture content at the beginning of each lecture online.
-
Ensure that all Zoom/Teams links for tutorials are set up at the start of term and that students are made aware of all dates at least three months in advance of the activity.

Compile a reading list of essential /required readings and additional reading in standard reference format to be updated annually by mid-July.

Confidently and competently work across a range of teaching platforms including online classroom and clinical spaces.

Liaise with the horizontal and vertical module leads and teachers to ensure high quality delivery across the qualifications suite.

Liaise with the Section Lead and Administrator on all aspects of the module, including, assessment and other institutional polices/processes.

Lead on creation of the timetable of the module in conjunction with the Section Lead, and dedicated Administrator, including inviting speakers to take part in teaching on the module.

Ensure the College of Optometrists section of accreditation that you are tasked with is up to date and discussed with the Section Lead prior to submission to ensure curriculum is in line with academic modules and overall aims of the programme for applicable modules.

Support clinical and academic supervision and tutoring on students on the programme, as directed by Programme Leads.

Provide pastoral support role for students.

Promote the development of excellence in learning and teaching through personal scholarly activity.
Assessment
- Overall responsibility for the Module assessment. Ensure awareness of local processes for assessment and marking (incl. second marking, moderation, external examiner), through a meeting with the section lead, and Administrator.

Work with the section lead and other module leads to determine the content of written, practical and clinical assessment aligned with the intended learning outcomes set out in the curriculum map.

Participate in writing and reviewing assessment materials for formative and summative written, practical and clinical examinations and to ensure participation by module teachers.

Participate in practical and clinical assessments and marking and to ensure participation by module leads and assist with marking for other modules.

Co-ordinate module assessments and course work.

Ensuring that the overall assessment requirements at the module and programme level satisfy accreditation and internal regulations.

Ensure the assessment criteria is clear and explicitly communicated to students and the Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator in a timely manner.

Ensure that draft exam papers are provided to the Administrator before the start of term, for scrutiny by the External Examiner.

Exam organised locally: Attend start of the exam, liaising with the Administrators regarding students with special examination arrangements.

Provide constructive written and oral feedback on formative and summative assessment for students to the Administrator for both the programme and short courses in the format and timescale within one calendar month of submission.
Quality Assurance

Actively engage in appropriate training and development to comply with mandatory requirements and sustain excellence in teaching activity.

To respond to issues raised through internal quality monitoring and assurance mechanisms to ensure appropriate follow up action. This includes but is not exclusive to course evaluation, responding to feedback, implementing innovations. Engagement with development groups/exam board/external examiner and respond to external audits, reviews and assessment.

To support educational appraisal.

Ensuring adherence to the GDPR policy and retention schedules in relation to student data.

Actively following, implementing and promoting policies, including Equal Opportunities.
Student Feedback

Ensure the content of student feedback forms about the module is correct and that these are distributed to students in good time.

Review student feedback, meet with the section lead (and other Module staff if necessary) to discuss student feedback and compile a response to students.
Other
-
Inform the short course and Administrator if you are going to be away and advise who can be contacted instead.

Report students of concern to the section lead and administrator; in emergencies or when unable to reach the section lead due to annual leave for instance, escalate to the Head of Optometry Education for reporting students of concern. This is also the responsibility of personal tutors, Programme Leads and Senior Teaching and Learning Administrators.

Be available for student queries and respond to them, normally within three working days via Extend Forums, email, etc.

Ensuring that the module reflects research-based education can be evidenced across the programme.

Attending role-related education meetings, away days, student and other promotional events.

Providing cover for other colleagues in busy periods or when staff are on annual or sick leave.

Actively following, implementing and promoting Equal Opportunities.

Complete any training course as required.
Institutional
- To take part in marketing initiatives and lead in the marketing of the modules as part of the section in relation to the module.
Clinical
