Job Title: Professor in AI

About the Role

The Computer Science Research Centre (CSRC) within the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is seeking to recruit a Professor in AI covering topics including (but not limited to) Large Machine Learning Models, Neurosymbolic AI, Trustworthy Machine Learning, and Applications of AI/ML in Automated Reasoning, Security, or Software/Systems Development.

This post is aligned to the Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) group within CSRC and is part of a strategic investment in AI. Our current research in AI focuses on solving foundational and real-world problems in areas such as Natural Language Processing, Optimisation, AI for Health and Medical Applications, and Security.

Responsibilities

  • Expand our dynamic team of internationally recognised AI researchers.
  • Link their work across the University including NICE; Surrey Centre for Cybersecurity (SCCS); Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP); the 5G/6G Innovation Centre; the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI Institute (PAI) and the Surrey Space Institute (SSI).
  • Drive a strategic research direction and align colleagues within CSRC and beyond.

Requirements

  • Wide knowledge of the AI field.
  • An internationally leading track record of publications in top-tier venues.
  • Significant research income.
  • Ideally, experience of working with industry and/or government.

About the University

Surrey has an established international reputation in AI research, 1st in the UK for computer vision and top 5 for AI, computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing (CSRankings.org). They were 7th in the UK for REF2021 outputs in Computer Science research. Computer Science and CVSSP are at the core of PAI, established in 2021 as a pan-University initiative which brings together leading AI research with discipline expertise across health, social, behavioural and engineering sciences, business, law, and the creative arts to shape future AI for the benefit of people and society.

Teaching

The candidate would be expected to contribute to AI features in both UG and MSc curricula as well as training within the CDTs and undertake other teaching duties in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
