Programme Director, Asia-Pacific Programme
Our Asia-Pacific programme provides objective and policy-relevant analysis of key political, security, economic and technological developments affecting this key region. By engaging decision-makers and experts in Asia and beyond, we identify opportunities to improve regional and international policy-making, in support of sustainable and equitable peace and development in the region.
The current programme has built strong capability on China and on India, as well as focussing on understanding the likely long-term trajectory of the region. We are keen to build on these strong foundations by expanding our funding and work on Japan and NE Asia, and to explore the web of connections within the region and to other key actors – notably the US.
We seek an established and creative thinker and leader to build on the institute’s powerful reputation and expertise. The central quality will be the ability to give a coherent and persuasive account of the geopolitics of the region and its impact on the world.
The right candidate will have the skills to further increase our influence and impact on the decisions made by governments, companies and societies, to build our funding base, particularly for new work on Japan, and to produce and oversee research and convening of the highest quality.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
