Programme Director for Global Economy and Finance Programme
We are looking for a Programme Director for our distinguished Global Economy and Finance programme following the retirement at the end of 2026 of the present Programme Director. We are looking for a real leader to build on the institute’s powerful reputation and expertise in global economics and finance and to increase our influence on the decisions that governments, companies and societies make on these fronts.
Reporting to our Director and CEO, this is an outstanding opportunity for an authoritative, imaginative expert to join us and lead one of our highest-profile streams of work.
The Global Economy and Finance programme addresses questions of global economic stability and prosperity and the policies and institutions that foster these. We welcome suggestions from applicants about how Chatham House should best shape its approach in a period of exceptional change. The programme’s role in Chatham House is both to cover global and macro questions of governance, stability, trade and growth, and to work with the thematic and country programmes to bolster their treatment of, for example, the economic impact of climate change, the digital economy and the competitive challenges of China.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
