Hawkwood Educational Programme Lead
Hawkwood is an arts and education charity that brings people together in support of creative endeavour, a flourishing community and sustainable environment. Hawkwood achieves its charitable purpose by providing: a place to create (artists in residence); a place for conversation (events, talks, films and other activities addressing the issues facing the planet); a place to grow (online and residential courses across the arts, music, wellbeing and transformative leadership); and a place to explore (providing an environment in which everyone can reconnect with nature).
Based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Hawkwood is a large, listed nineteenth century house situated in a sustainably-managed 42-acre estate.
Role Description
Lead the development, planning, delivery and evaluation of Hawkwood’s educational programme, curating a coherent and financially sustainable mix of courses, retreats, workshops, conferences, festivals and events across arts and creativity, climate and sustainability, wellbeing, and transformative leadership.
Take responsibility for programme quality, income and budgets, drawing on Hawkwood’s Fellowship, Artist Residency Programme and wider charitable activity to develop distinctive learning opportunities and relationships.
Responsible For
- Leading, curating, planning and overseeing Hawkwood’s educational programme in the areas of arts, wellbeing, leadership and sustainability.
- Developing programme strategy and new partnerships with the CEO. Managing programme budgets and achieving agreed income targets.
- Leading relationships with facilitators, contributors, guest curators and programme partners. Overseeing programme administration, contracts, delivery and evaluation.
- Connecting the educational programme with Hawkwood’s Artist Residency Programme, Fellowship and wider charitable activity.
- Sharing line management responsibility for the Programme and Marketing Assistant.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Programme leadership and development
- In conjunction with the Head of Communications and CEO, develop and lead the annual programme in line with Hawkwood’s charitable purpose, business plan and agreed income targets.
- Work with the CEO to develop Hawkwood’s programme strategy, exploring new partnerships and ways of working, and coordinating the planning and delivery of programmes arising from these collaborations. Maintain the overall programme framework, core offer and balance across arts and creativity, climate and sustainability, wellbeing and transformative leadership.
- Research and develop inspirational and imaginative courses and events, informed by audience interests, emerging ideas, participant feedback and the expertise within Hawkwood’s networks.
- Establish an annual planning cycle with clear deadlines for programme development, tutor appointments, budgeting and publication.
- Identify and approach potential guest curators early in the planning cycle to develop selected areas of the programme, drawing on their specialist knowledge and networks.
- Agree briefs, budgets and deadlines with guest curators and oversee their work, retaining responsibility for the quality, coherence and balance of the overall programme.

Income and Financial management
- Manage programme budgets and take responsibility for achieving agreed annual income targets.
- Assess the financial viability of proposed courses and events, agree tutor fees and monitor income, expenditure and booking performance.
- Work with colleagues in marketing, bookings and operations to respond to sales trends and make timely decisions about programme changes.
- Report on programme performance, including financial results, participation and feedback, to inform future planning.
Tutors, contributors and partnerships
- Lead relationships with tutors, speakers, curators and programme partners, ensuring clear agreements, effective communication and appropriate support.
- Build relationships with educational and cultural organisations, community groups and other partners to develop programme opportunities and reach new audiences.
- Work with the Artist Residency programme to identify connections and co-curation opportunities with the educational programme.
- Systematically consider Fellows as potential tutors, speakers and contributors during programme planning, matching their expertise and interests to suitable opportunities.
- Develop and oversee programme activity for the local community, including the May Day Festival.
Planning and delivery
- Oversee the effective delivery of the programme, coordinating requirements with bookings, hospitality, operations and marketing colleagues.
- Delegate and oversee routine programme administration, including gathering course information, uploading website content, maintaining CRM records and coordinating standard tutor communications.
- Ensure course information is accurate, complete and ready for publication at least six months before the course date.
- Maintain oversight of tutor contracts and ensure agreed arrangements are recorded and communicated to the relevant teams.
- Lead tutor welcomes and introductions, host selected events onsite and online, and support guest arrivals when required.
- Use operations meetings to communicate programme requirements, resolve practical issues and confirm responsibilities.
- Review participant and tutor feedback, address complaints with the line manager and use findings to improve programme quality and delivery.
- Share line-management responsibility for the Programme and Marketing Assistant with the Head of Communications, jointly agreeing priorities, coordinating workloads and supporting their development.

Marketing and communications
- Provide the marketing team with clear guidance on each course or event’s purpose, intended audience and distinctive appeal.
- Work with the Programme and Marketing Assistant to provide timely course descriptions, tutor information and other material needed for promotion.
- Develop a blended approach to courses and residencies, combining onsite activity with appropriate online learning and opportunities to film and share content, with the necessary permissions and consideration of participant privacy.
- Help communicate the connections between Hawkwood’s courses, tutors, artists, Fellows and wider charitable work.
General
- Work co-operatively with colleagues and contribute to the wider work of Hawkwood.
- Comply with Hawkwood’s policies and procedures, as set out in the Staff Handbook, and follow the staff code of conduct.
- Maintain high standards of professionalism, honesty and respect.
- Take care of your working environment and use Hawkwood’s facilities and resources responsibly.
- Attend meetings and undertake training and professional development appropriate to the role.
- Work occasional additional hours, including evenings and weekends, as reasonably required to fulfil the role and in accordance with agreed working arrangements.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the level and responsibilities of the post.
