GRØ Careers has been appointed as the exclusive recruitment partner to an established AJ100 architectural practice as it enters the next phase of growth within its London studio.
We’ve spent time directly with the leadership team, understanding not only the projects they need help delivering, but the type of person they want to build the studio around.
And this is not simply another Project Architect vacancy.
There comes a point where being trusted with a package or workstream is no longer enough.
You want to understand the whole project.
- Why the programme is structured the way it is.
- What the client is worried about.
- Where the design needs protecting.
- What the team needs to deliver next.
And ultimately, you want to become the person people trust to make those decisions.
A Small London Studio. A Much Bigger Practice Behind It
You’ll join the London team of an established AJ100 practice with more than 100+ people nationally.
The London studio is intentionally much smaller, giving you the visibility, autonomy and access to senior leadership of a close-knit team, while retaining the resources and technical capability of a significantly larger practice.
London is increasingly seen as the creative hub of the business, with much of the feasibility, early-stage thinking and design development originating here.
But this isn't exclusively front-end.
As projects progress, the person leading them continues to lead them - carrying responsibility through technical development, coordination and delivery, supported by wider teams across the practice where required.
That creates the opportunity to stay close to both the design intent and the wider project journey rather than being disconnected once planning is achieved.
The Work
The immediate workload includes several substantial residential, mixed-use and student residential projects progressing concurrently, alongside feasibility studies and new opportunities entering the studio.
The projects naturally ebb and flow.
- One day you may be breaking a major milestone into a workable programme for the team.
- The next, chairing a consultant meeting, resolving a coordination issue, reviewing information produced by an Architectural Assistant or presenting options to a client.

The Client Should Call You
One of the most interesting aspects of the studio is the way responsibility is deliberately handed down.
A Director within the London team has developed under the mentorship of a Senior Director (ex-Fosters), taking ownership of projects, teams and client relationships.
And these aren’t peripheral relationships.
They include market-leading clients that many senior figures elsewhere would be reluctant to hand over at all.
Instead of ringfencing those relationships at the top, the Senior Director has deliberately created space for the next generation to build trust directly with them.
Today, those clients call the Project Architect first.
That is the development model they want to continue.
Because becoming a genuinely capable architect requires more than technical ability.
It requires client relationships, judgement, commercial awareness, leadership and confidence.
There is a genuine route towards an Associate role, but progression comes through trust and ownership rather than simply time served.
You Don’t Need To Arrive As A Finished Article
You may already be an Architect with significant responsibility, or operating at Project Architect level.
What matters more is what you can do now and what you’re ready to take responsibility for next.
Large-scale residential experience would translate particularly well, including Build to Rent, PBSA, mixed-use, major regeneration or conventional multi-residential development.
You should be comfortable in Revit, able to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and communicate confidently with clients and consultants.
Most importantly, you should want the actual responsibility.
- The meeting where a decision needs making.
- The programme that needs reorganising.
- The architectural assistant who needs direction.
- The client who needs confidence that somebody has control.
At the same time, the studio values self-awareness. You don’t need to know everything - you do need to know when to make the call yourself and when to bring somebody more experienced into the conversation.

A More Sustainable Way Of Working
The practice operates reduced weekly working hours compared with many London studios, alongside hybrid working and flexibility around how teams organise their week.
Where legitimate additional hours are required, overtime can also be paid.

The Practical Details
- Position: Project Architect / Senior Architect (DOE)

- Salary: £48,000-£50,000, with flexibility upwards for particularly strong profiles
- Software: Revit essential
- Working pattern: Hybrid, with regular studio collaboration
- Hours: Reduced working hours compared with many architectural practices
- Projects: Large-scale residential, student residential, mixed-use, feasibility and early-stage design
- Progression: Genuine opportunity to develop towards Associate-level project and client ownership

This probably isn’t right if your ambition is simply to become faster at delivering somebody else’s architecture.
It is much more interesting if you want to lead the meeting rather than simply attend it, shape the programme rather than receive the deadline, and build the client relationship rather than always have a senior figure sitting between you.
