Project Development Manager – Biogas & Biomethane
UK & Ireland
Location: UK or Ireland, with regular travel across both markets

The Opportunity
Our client is an established player within the European biogas and biomethane sector and is looking to appoint a Project Development Manager – UK & Ireland to support the development and expansion of its project portfolio.
This is a commercially minded project-development position for someone capable of taking opportunities from early-stage origination through feasibility, permitting, commercial structuring, and investment readiness.
The successful candidate will develop relationships across the agricultural, waste, industrial, and energy sectors, identify viable opportunities, and coordinate internal and external stakeholders to turn those opportunities into investable biogas and biomethane projects.
Key Responsibilities
Project Origination & Development
- Identify and originate new greenfield and brownfield biogas/biomethane opportunities across the UK and Ireland.
- Assess potential projects across feedstock availability, land, planning, grid connectivity, technology, economics, and offtake.
- Build and manage a strong pipeline of development opportunities.
- Lead projects through feasibility and early-stage development towards FID and construction readiness.
- Identify opportunities to acquire, expand, convert, or optimize existing AD/biogas assets.
- Develop investment cases and provide recommendations on project viability.
Feedstock & Commercial Development
- Develop relationships with farmers, agricultural businesses, food manufacturers, waste producers, and other potential feedstock partners.
- Support negotiation of long-term feedstock and substrate agreements.
- Evaluate feedstock quality, availability, seasonality, logistics, and commercial implications.
- Identify suitable biomethane, Bio-CNG, and other renewable-gas offtake opportunities.
- Work with commercial teams on project revenues, contracts, and route-to-market strategies.

Planning, Permitting & Grid
- Coordinate planning applications, environmental permitting, and relevant regulatory processes.
- Assess gas and electricity grid connection opportunities and constraints.
- Manage relationships with network operators, planning authorities, environmental regulators, and specialist consultants.
- Understand the different regulatory and development environments across the UK, Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland.
Project & Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate engineering, commercial, legal, financial, and environmental workstreams.
- Manage external consultants and development partners.
- Establish strong relationships with landowners, local communities, authorities, technology providers, and strategic partners.
- Maintain project schedules, development budgets, risk registers, and key milestones.
- Prepare project updates and investment materials for senior management and investment committees.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone with demonstrable experience in renewable-energy or infrastructure project development, ideally with direct exposure to biogas, biomethane, or anaerobic digestion.
You could currently be working for a biogas developer/operator, utility, infrastructure investor, EPC, technology provider, agricultural business, or renewable-energy developer.
You should bring:
- Experience developing renewable-energy or infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of the biogas/biomethane value chain.
- Knowledge of AD feedstocks, particularly agricultural residues, manure/slurry, food waste, and/or energy crops.
- Experience with planning, permitting, land, grid connections, or project commercialization.
- Commercial ability to evaluate opportunities and build credible business cases.
- Strong stakeholder-management and negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple development projects simultaneously.
- Confidence operating independently across the UK and Ireland.
- Strong written and verbal English.
- Willingness to travel regularly to project sites and meet partners.

Experience with biomethane grid injection, gas upgrading, Bio-CNG, digestate, CO₂ recovery, development-stage M&A, or existing AD plant conversions would be particularly valuable.
What Success Looks Like
The Project Development Manager will become a key figure in expanding the company's UK & Ireland presence—creating a bankable pipeline rather than simply identifying leads.
Success will mean finding the right sites and partners, securing feedstock and land, navigating development risks, building commercially viable projects, and progressively moving opportunities towards investment and construction.
