Are you an experienced Engineer looking for a new challenge within a dynamic and forward-thinking local authority? West Berkshire Council are looking to recruit an experienced Project Engineer to work within our busy Asset Management team.

About the Role

Reporting to the Principal Engineer, you will contribute to the delivery of Environmental Services in West Berkshire, particularly the site supervision and inspection of contractor’s highway construction work to ensure works comply with the design and construction requirements as set out on any contract drawings and specification.

The Role / Ideal Candidate

Our Highway and Street Lighting Team are looking for a highly motivated and technically strong Project Engineer to be involved in the delivery of challenging highway improvement and maintenance schemes. We have a great team and environment, to support and develop our engineers, so they are continuously developing their skills.

You should have significant experience in such civil engineering projects and a thorough understanding of construction materials and their application.

Knowledge of construction methods and contract procedures, ideally through a term contract arrangement, is required and you will also need a full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle to fulfil this role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
