About The Role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D is looking for a motivated and experienced Project Engineer - Substations to join our team in Keadby, Scunthorpe. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the successful delivery of major substation projects, working at the heart of the UK's critical power infrastructure.

As Project Engineer, you will lead and coordinate the engineering delivery of projects, ensuring engineered solutions are planned, communicated, and implemented safely, efficiently, and in line with project requirements.

Working closely with the Project Manager, Construction Manager, and Site Manager, you will act as the vital link between design and construction, ensuring engineering activities are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead and participate in project reviews, coordination meetings, and engineering progress reviews.
  • Ensure engineering activities are delivered in accordance with project governance requirements, procedures, and approvals.
  • Maintain accurate project records, including progress reporting, site records, technical documentation, and construction records.
  • Prepare and present internal and external reports to support project decision-making and stakeholder engagement.
  • Track engineering deliverables through design, construction, commissioning, handover, and close-out.
  • Develop, review, and implement engineering solutions that are safe, practical, and cost-effective.
  • Interpret technical information, specifications, and drawings, translating them into deliverable construction activities.
  • Assess engineering risks, constraints, and opportunities to support informed decision-making.
  • Determine plant, equipment, and resource requirements to support efficient delivery.
  • Support value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives to optimize project outcomes.
  • Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm and promote a positive safety culture.
  • Develop, review, and approve RAMS, lift plans, work package plans, and construction methodologies.
  • Ensure engineering controls are identified and implemented to support safe systems of work.
  • Identify, assess, and manage project risks, hazards, and environmental impacts.
  • Support incident investigations and implement lessons learned.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, company procedures, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Carry out audits, inspections, monitoring activities, and safety tours to drive continual improvement.
  • Ensure personnel have the required competence, training, and authorisations for the tasks being undertaken.
  • Lead engineering risk and opportunity reviews within allocated projects or work packages.
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate technical, programme, and construction risks.
  • Escalate issues beyond delegated authority and support the development of suitable mitigation measures.
  • Monitor and manage engineering change to minimize project impact.
  • Support the maintenance and review of project risk registers.
  • Define engineering requirements for materials, plant, equipment, and subcontracted services.
  • Coordinate procurement activities to support programme requirements.
  • Manage engineering interfaces with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance, progress, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Ensure materials, plant, and resources are available to meet project delivery milestones.
  • Ensure engineering solutions comply with contractual, statutory, and customer requirements.

Who we're looking for

We are looking for an organised, innovative, and proactive Project Engineer with proven experience delivering engineering and construction projects within regulated infrastructure environments.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Previous experience as a Site Engineer, with clear progression into engineering coordination, planning, and project delivery responsibilities.
  • Experience in a similar role, ideally within National Grid, DNO, or power transmission environments.
  • A strong understanding of safe systems of work, including RAMS, permits, lift plans, and temporary works controls.
  • Experience managing project risks, technical challenges, and changes through a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • Experience working within operational substations and under National Grid Safety Rules.
  • Knowledge of coordinating activities within National Grid or DNO operational substations, including permit requirements, site access arrangements, Control Person interfaces, and Safety Rules compliance.
  • Experience delivering power transmission projects, including substations, cabling, civil works, demolition, enabling works, and asset replacement activities.
  • A sound understanding of project delivery principles, including health and safety, quality, programme, and cost control.
  • Knowledge of standard forms of contract and the commercial implications of project decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong relationship-building, influencing, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent planning, coordination, and organizational abilities, with a proven track record of delivering projects to programme.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure whilst maintaining a proactive and flexible approach.
  • A resilient and determined mindset, with a commitment to achieving successful project outcomes.
  • A passion for supporting and developing others through coaching and mentoring.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development and personal growth.
  • A collaborative approach that promotes diversity, inclusion, and teamwork.
  • A strong commitment to Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.
