I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
We’re seeking someone who has excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proven ability to manage internal and external stakeholders. You’ll need to bring strong organisational skills and the confidence to manage multiple workstreams, prioritise tasks effectively, and motivate both direct and third-party teams. Operating in a fast-paced and dynamic setting means you’ll also need to be fluid in your approach, managing expectations clearly while having the courage to challenge team members and external suppliers to ensure high-quality work is delivered on time, to cost, and to the required standards.
You’ll join our team with the capability to identify and manage risks and opportunities across all projects within your portfolio, drawing on an excellent understanding of health and safety-related risk management. You will also play a key role in ensuring Severn Trent fulfils its duties as Client under CDM regulations and remains compliant with all external legislation. Experience of working closely with the supply chain is essential, particularly in supporting the delivery of projects to defined milestones, specifications, health and safety expectations, outputs, and quality requirements.
A critical part of the role includes managing programme finances, from long-term financial planning through to accurate forecasting and budget allocation. You’ll be expected to seek out the best financial and innovative solutions for Severn Trent, ensuring our investments are optimised and robust. Strong hydraulic and problem-solving skills will be vital, including the ability to identify and promote effective solutions and carry out hydraulic modelling where required.
While the right skills and experience matter, we’re equally passionate about finding someone with the right character—someone positive, caring, and ready to get involved. We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality, knowing that diverse minds, experiences, and backgrounds help us learn and better serve our communities. We want people who show up, take ownership, and want to be part of something bigger—people who want to make a meaningful difference because they genuinely care. A full UK driving licence will also be required for this role.
