Job Purpose
The Project Engineer - PMO & Transformation will play a central role in establishing and operating the PMO and capability within Network Design. The role will connect technical delivery teams with management, translating engineering priorities, risks and dependencies into clear portfolio insight, coordinated action and effective decision-making.
The role will support the management of the Network Design portfolio, coordinate incoming requests and priorities, and help shape and deliver a structured programme of continuous improvement. It will bring together portfolio governance, performance insight, stakeholder communication and delivery to improve visibility, focus and outcomes across the department.
Working across technical specialists, project and programme leads, managers and senior stakeholders, the role will turn complex information into practical plans, meaningful KPIs, evidence-based recommendations and concise executive communications.
What You'll Do
- Support the establishment and continuous development of the Network Design PMO and continuous improvement capability, including fit-for-purpose governance, rhythms, standards, tools and reporting.
- Maintain an integrated view of the Network Design portfolio, including initiatives, requests, improvement opportunities, milestones, dependencies, risks, issues, resources and expected benefits.
- Coordinate the intake, assessment and prioritisation of new requests, ensuring that scope, ownership, urgency, value, dependencies and delivery implications are understood before work is commissioned or prioritised.
- Act as an articulation point between technical teams and management, translating complex engineering information into clear portfolio insight, decisions, actions and executive-level messages.
- Working with the Network Design teams and ND stakeholders to identify and focus on highest value growth opportunities.
- Develop and maintain meaningful KPIs and management information that provide visibility of delivery performance, demand, capacity, risk, outcomes and benefits.
- Analyse data and identify trends, constraints and emerging issues, producing evidence-based recommendations that support timely and transparent decision-making.
- Prepare concise, accurate and audience-appropriate communications for governance forums and senior stakeholders, including dashboards, briefing notes, presentations, decision papers and progress updates.
- Coordinate portfolio and programme governance, including the preparation of meetings, maintenance of actions and decisions, escalation of material risks and follow-through on agreed outcomes.
- Support the design and delivery of a prioritised improvement programme, working with process owners and technical subject matter experts to move opportunities from problem definition through implementation and benefits realisation.
- Promote consistent ways of working, proportionate controls and high-quality portfolio data, while ensuring that governance enables delivery rather than creating unnecessary administration.
- Build effective relationships across Network Design and interfacing teams, creating alignment on priorities, responsibilities, dependencies and change impacts.
- Capture lessons learned, share good practice and support adoption of new processes, tools and ways of working through clear engagement and change management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
