An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the rapidly expanding AMRC group as Project Engineer - Additive Manufacturing at the new AMRC North West facility on the Samlesbury Enterprise Zone near Blackburn.
You will use your skills in engineering and/or a relevant science subject to provide engineering support to the team, helping to enhance the capability and reputation of the AMRC NW in the field of additive manufacturing. In this varied and dynamic role, you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of both large and small research projects from concept to completion ensuring that projects are delivered to an exceptional standard. You will have experience within a practical ‘hands on’ work environment, in additive manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing technologies. You will be working within the technical teams as well as interacting and working with our industrial partners.
You Will:
- Have a good degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- A good grasp of engineering and/or scientific principles.
- Have experience within a practical environment; hands-on work, ideally in metallic additive manufacturing.
- Be a strong communicator, both written and verbally.
- Be able to work to deadlines.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Create manufacturing plans, route cards, and procedures to support research activities in additive manufacturing (AM) and other advanced manufacturing processes.
- Assist in the delivery of research projects by conducting experiments, collecting, recording, and analysing data, and contributing to technical reports.
- Operate additive manufacturing equipment and associated manufacturing technologies, including 3D printers, 5-axis machine tools, and post-processing equipment, following established procedures (training will be provided).
- Undertake material characterisation activities, including sample preparation, tensile testing, hardness testing, and X-ray CT scanning (training will be provided).
- Support the development and optimisation of AM processes through design for AM, process monitoring, material characterisation, and process evaluation where appropriate.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with quality standards, safe working practices, and Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements.
- Plan and manage individual workloads to meet project objectives and agreed timescales.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams, communicating progress and technical findings clearly to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Assist in coordinating project activities by monitoring progress against agreed milestones and contributing to the successful delivery of project outcomes.
- Provide technical support and guidance on AM processes where appropriate, demonstrating a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Contribute to the procurement and preparation of materials, equipment, and consumables required for research activities.
- Support colleagues across research groups and contribute to multiple projects as required to meet organisational priorities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement activities, identifying opportunities to enhance manufacturing processes, research methods, and laboratory practices.
- Promote ethical, sustainable, and responsible engineering practices in line with the University's sustainability strategy.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.
