About Aspen Solutions

Aspen Solutions is a Scotland-based IT managed service provider supporting businesses across a range of sectors, with a strong hospitality specialism. We have delivered infrastructure, cloud, security and connectivity services since 1998 through a structured, standards-driven model. We are investing in our project delivery capability as our client base grows and our project pipeline builds.

The Role

The Project Engineer owns the hands-on delivery of our infrastructure, migration and cloud projects, from technical scoping through to client handover. A typical project looks like a multi-site Azure consolidation with domain controller migrations, ESXi removal, and a network and firewall refresh, so we need real depth on-premises as well as in the Microsoft cloud.

You will also be the named senior escalation point for our service desk, owning the L3 escalation queue alongside the tickets attached to your own project work. You will not sit in the standard support queues as a daily resource for reactive problems, though there will be occasions where the business asks you to cover for a defined period. This is a delivery and escalation seat with genuine technical authority, senior in what you own and what you are paid rather than in the job title.

You will work closely with our sales team, project management and service delivery colleagues, taking an agreed direction and turning it into a scoped, priced, deliverable project. You are the technical authority in that conversation.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure and migration delivery

  • Deliver Windows Server, Active Directory and domain controller migrations end to end
  • Deliver Hyper-V and VMware ESXi virtualisation, consolidation and decommissioning work
  • Deliver Azure IaaS and Microsoft cloud transformation projects, including complex multi-site work

Project scoping and technical design

  • Translate client requirements into a scoped, priced piece of work at project level
  • Produce technical designs and support statements of work with Project Management and Sales
  • Validate effort, dependencies and technical risk before work is committed
  • Turn client roadmap items and technology alignment findings into deliverable projects

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Senior technical escalation (L3)

  • Act as the named senior escalation point for the service desk on complex technical issues
  • Lead investigation and recovery on high impact incidents, including ransomware and data recovery
  • Author root cause analysis where an incident requires it
  • Feed recurring escalation themes back into standards and problem management

L3 escalation queue and planned cover

  • Own tickets and tasks relating to live project work, from raise through to closure
  • Work the L3 escalation queue to agreed response and resolution standards
  • Provide reactive cover by secondment only, for a defined business reason and an agreed period
  • Keep ticket notes, time recording and documentation current in Autotask

Technical standards and coaching

  • Create repeatable technical standards, build documents and templates from project work
  • Coach engineers across service delivery and projects, raising technical capability
  • Contribute to the internal knowledge base so delivery does not depend on any one person

What We Are Looking For

Essential

  • Demonstrable hands-on experience delivering on-premises Windows Server, Active Directory and multi-domain-controller migrations
  • Strong virtualisation delivery experience across Hyper-V and VMware ESXi, including migration, consolidation and virtual switching, with PowerShell scripting
  • Azure IaaS design and migration experience, alongside core Microsoft 365 administration across Exchange, SharePoint and Teams
  • Practical firewall and network edge experience, including configuration, replacement and site-to-site connectivity
  • Backup, disaster recovery and recovery from major incidents, with the ability to author a clear root cause analysis
  • Experience delivering multi-site projects for SMB clients, ideally within an MSP or IT services environment
  • Able to lead a technical conversation with a client, explain options in plain language and hold the technical decision
  • Comfortable holding an escalation queue and PSA tooling alongside live project work
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites

Desirable

  • SonicWall certification (SNSA or SNSP) or equivalent firewall vendor certification
  • Microsoft certification in Azure infrastructure or Microsoft 365
  • VMware or Hyper-V vendor certification
  • Experience with Autotask, or a similar PSA and RMM stack
  • Experience scoping and pricing project work, including writing or contributing to statements of work

What This Role Is Not

  • It is not an account management or client ownership role. Account relationships and commercial ownership sit elsewhere in the business.
  • It is not a pure consulting role. You will be in the detail, delivering the work yourself.
  • It is not a service desk seat. You own project tickets and L3 escalations, and you are not a daily ticket resource for reactive problems.

What You Can Expect from Aspen

  • A senior technical seat with real ownership of how our project work is delivered
  • A clear structure and defined measures, so you know exactly what success looks like
  • Project variety across infrastructure, cloud, network and security work
  • Investment in certification and technical development
  • Competitive salary at our senior engineer band, commensurate with experience

Key Metrics

The Project Engineer is accountable for the following measurable outcomes:

  • Projects delivered on time and in scope
  • Scoping accuracy, measured as projects delivered within scoped hours
  • L3 escalations resolved
  • L3 queue performance against target response and resolution times
  • Project documentation and handover completed at closure
