Project Engineer - Rolling Stock

Location: Derby + UK Wide
Travel Type: Permanent
Salary / Rate: Negotiable

About the role

We’re recruiting a hands-on Rolling Stock Engineer for a rail services and projects business. You’ll support the delivery of client service contracts and turnkey vehicle modification projects, working both in the company workshop (manufacture, assembly, testing and kitting) and on client sites.

This is a technical, practical role. It would suit an experienced engineer with a practical leaning, or a rail manufacturing operative or team leader looking to broaden their skillset. You’ll be self-sufficient, solve problems, prioritise your own workload and support the Services Manager.

Key responsibilities

Service contracts

  • Liaise with clients and coordinate visits
  • Fault find, working with office-based engineers where needed
  • Replace, test and calibrate equipment

Projects

  • Plan and lead on-site works with the relevant Project Engineer
  • Plan mobilisation: method statements, modification procedures, labour, tooling, calibration, pre-assembly and kitting
  • Produce method statements, risk assessments, and modification, testing and commissioning procedures
  • Build test boxes and small-scale production items such as harnesses and electro-mechanical sub-assemblies
  • Produce cost estimates, installation timescales and technical input to bids
  • Manage sub-contract labour, including competence management
  • Capture, assess and resolve engineering change during installations, keeping drawings and documentation up to date
  • Monitor on-site progress against project timescales
  • Coordinate supplier First Article Inspections and kitting with procurement
  • Act as the on-site interface with clients
  • Manage and, where needed, deliver rectification programmes
  • Manage the on-site workshop facility, including housekeeping, safety practice, and the tooling asset and calibration register
  • Support design reviews with a focus on design for installation and maintenance
  • Lead on HSQE practices

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
