Project Engineer (Underground Cables) for Kintore to Hurlie Transmission Line Upgrade

This is an exciting opportunity to join a major electricity transmission project involving the undergrounding of an existing 132kV single-circuit overhead line across a 1.6km route, along with the delivery of the associated Cable Sealing End Compound (CSEC).

Position Details

  • Job Title: Project Engineer, Underground Cables
  • Location: Aberdeen (site-based)
  • Contract Duration: 12 months, with the potential for extension
  • Reporting To: Project Manager

Role Overview

As the Project Engineer, Underground Cables, you will play a key role in supporting the Project Manager, Site Teams, and Commercial Teams to ensure the successful delivery of the underground cable route and associated infrastructure works.

You will assist in managing the cable supply contract and oversee the performance of the civil engineering contractor responsible for the design, construction, and installation activities. The role will involve close collaboration with SSEN, suppliers, subcontractors, landowners, and other stakeholders to ensure the project is delivered safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards.

  • Supporting the management of the cable supply contract, including cables, fittings, and accessories.
  • Witnessing and participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) on behalf of the client.
  • Supporting the design, development, and delivery of the underground cable route and CSEC works.
  • Coordinating with design teams, suppliers, subcontractors, and client representatives.
  • Monitoring contractor performance to ensure delivery is on time, within budget, and meets quality standards.
  • Maintaining records relating to access agreements and site-related changes.
  • Assisting the construction team in resolving technical and programme-related challenges.
  • Reviewing method statements and risk assessments.
  • Attending project, safety, progress, and client review meetings.
  • Escalating project risks and issues where appropriate.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with clients, landowners, and third-party stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for candidates with experience and skills that align with the following requirements:

  • Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering.
  • Relevant health and safety qualifications such as NEBOSH or IOSH.
  • Proven experience in the design and delivery of underground cable projects.
  • Experience working within project delivery teams on site-based infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of large-scale electricity transmission projects delivered for UK Transmission Network Operators.
  • Experience of Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) processes.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Work on-site in Aberdeen.
  • Travel occasionally to other UK locations.
  • Travel overseas on occasion to witness Factory Acceptance Tests.
  • Hold a full, clean UK driving licence.
  • Comply with company Drug and Alcohol Testing policies.
  • Adhere to the client's Health & Safety, Quality, and Environmental management systems.
