Project Engineering Lead

Role Purpose

The Project Engineering Lead is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering engineering activities across complex engineering programmes. Working closely with the Project Manager, Technical Lead, and Systems Engineering Lead, the role provides leadership across multidisciplinary teams covering systems, software, electronics, firmware, integration, and test. The position ensures engineering deliverables meet programme milestones, technical requirements, quality standards, and customer expectations throughout the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through integration, verification, validation, qualification, and in-service support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Engineering Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), work packages, schedules, and resource plans.
  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams across software, electronics, firmware, systems, and test.
  • Manage engineering delivery against programme milestones, budgets, resources, and technical objectives.
  • Coordinate system integration, verification, validation, and qualification activities.
  • Manage engineering risks, issues, dependencies, and resource constraints.
  • Ensure requirements traceability, configuration management, and technical documentation are maintained.
  • Coordinate design reviews, technical assurance activities, programme gates, and customer deliverables.
  • Provide regular engineering progress reports, forecasts, and risk updates to programme leadership.
  • Promote compliance with defence engineering standards, quality processes, and programme governance.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Significant experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams within defence, aerospace, or complex electronic and software-based product development.
  • Proven experience managing engineering delivery across the full product lifecycle.
  • Experience with engineering planning, WBS, work package management, resource allocation, and programme delivery.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering, requirements management, integration, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with tools such as IBM DOORS, Polarion, Jama, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, engineering governance, configuration management, and structured development processes.

Desirable

  • INCOSE ASEP/CSEP or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
  • APM PMQ, PRINCE2, or equivalent project management qualification.
  • Experience with defence acquisition, technical assurance, and formal customer acceptance processes.
