Interim Systems Accountant – D365 Development Project
Rapidly-Expanding, PE-Backed Services Group
Location: Essex (3-4 days per week in the office)
Duration: 6-12 months
Rate: £600-700 per day, Outside IR35
A rapidly-expanding, PE-backed services group is looking for an interim Systems Accountant to lead a project to develop its use of D365 and improve the speed, accuracy, and control of its finance function. Reporting to the Group Finance Director, you will take ownership of D365 as the core finance platform and be the person who makes it work properly as the group continues to grow.
This is a hands-on, technically minded finance role. You will shape how the system is configured, how the month-end runs, and how the finance team uses it every day, and you will leave the business with a more robust, better-controlled platform.
What you'll be doing
D365 ownership and optimisation
- Reviewing and improving the finance configuration in D365: chart of accounts, financial dimensions, posting logic, ledger setup, workflows, approval hierarchies, fixed assets, and tax
- Acting as the first point of contact between Finance and IT or external support
- Fixing pain points in revenue recognition, WIP and project tracking, capex coding, and intercompany postings and reconciliations
- Setting up new entities, cost centres, and revenue streams correctly, and improving data integrity at source
- Investigating why sub-ledgers and feeder systems don't agree to the GL, and fixing the mechanism rather than just the entry

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
