Project Manager – Heavy Civils / Tunnelling
Location: Southampton / Southern Water Region
Employment: Contract
Duration: 2+ Years
Sector: Water / Heavy Civils / Tunnelling
Rate: £400 per day – dependent on experience
J3A Recruitment are working in partnership with a major specialist civil engineering contractor to recruit an experienced Project Manager for a long-term programme of works across the Southern Water region.
The successful Project Manager will take responsibility for the delivery of complex heavy civil engineering works, with a particular focus on shaft construction and tunnelling, managing projects from mobilisation through construction and ultimately handover.
This represents an excellent opportunity for an experienced civils professional looking for genuine long-term contract continuity, with an anticipated programme of work extending beyond two years.
The Role
As Project Manager, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient and commercially aware delivery of works, including:
- Managing shaft construction, tunnelling and associated heavy civils packages
- Taking projects from mobilisation through to completion and handover
- Managing site teams, subcontractors and direct labour
- Planning and coordinating plant, materials and equipment
- Managing construction programmes and short-term lookaheads
- Monitoring progress, productivity, cost, quality and health & safety
- Resolving technical and operational issues on site
- Working closely with the client, designers and other project stakeholders
- Ensuring accurate project records, reporting and commercial information
- Driving high standards of safety, quality and delivery throughout the project

About You
We're looking for an experienced construction professional with a strong background in heavy civil engineering.
Experience within shaft sinking, tunnelling, deep excavations or underground infrastructure would be particularly advantageous.
You will ideally bring:
- Proven Project Management experience within heavy civils
- Strong site delivery and leadership experience
- Experience managing complex civil engineering packages
- Water / wastewater infrastructure experience advantageous
- Tunnelling and shaft construction experience highly advantageous
- Strong programme and resource management skills
- Ability to manage clients, designers, subcontractors and site teams
- Good commercial awareness
- Practical, delivery-focused approach to solving site challenges

Tickets / Qualifications
Essential:
- SMSTS
- CSCS
- Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC)
- Confined Spaces
Additional qualifications including First Aid and Confined Spaces would be advantageous.
The Opportunity
This is a long-term contract opportunity with 2+ years of anticipated work on a major Southern Water programme.
We're particularly interested in speaking with Project Managers, Construction Managers and experienced Senior Agents who have delivered challenging heavy civils packages and are comfortable taking genuine ownership of projects on site.
